I'm all too aware that a little hero worship tossed in the direction of Jane Birkin is not entirely original. But, it isn't the English actress/singermodel's effortlessly groovy—not to mention iconic—personal style, nor is it her perfect pout that I'm thinking about; it's her kitchen.  I'm not sure when I came upon this photo but my guess is that it was during one of many google image search sessions of Jane that I would use as inspiration for my hair dresser.  Sadly, but not suprisingly, the famous Birkin bangs failed to transform me into a slinky 70's vixen. But that photo of Jane at home being the coolest mom on the planet... that sort of seemed possible.

The image, taken by photographer Claude Azoulay in 1976, is of Birkin, her then-husband (and frequent collaborator) Serge Gainsbourg, their daughter, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Birkin's daughter from a previous marriage, Kate Barry. The couple was typically pictured out in the town or in some sort of romantic embrace, but in this case, they represent my personal vision of blissfully rustic domesticity.  (This particular shot is a photograph of a copy I have hanging in my office.)

That kitchen was probably tucked inside a spawling Parisian flat several flights up from a bustling boulevard below—not the french countryside cabin I often envision. With that in mind, it's a bit easier to imagine my own transformation from Brooklyn to Birkin.

The effortless yet indulgent scene (check out that spread—and only one pot!) starts with a careful arrangement of pots, bowls and jars lining perfectly aged wood cabinets.

Its all about having the right tools; these just happen to be beautiful too. My old crock pot sat in a box for years. When I received a Le Creuset dutch oven as a birthday gift, inspiration had arrived!

After the meal, I imagine the family curling up with some sultry music and esoteric reading materials.

I'd settle for a Pendleton blanket (starting bid, $9.99) and a pile of vintage magazines, with Harvest by Neil Young as my soundtrack (various prices).

And why not throw in a roaring fire? Sometimes, a littie kitsch goes a long way.

Finally, while loose-fitting blue jeans and a white t-shirt capture the vibe at home, I have no doubt that they were only underpinnings when Birkin ventured outside to face the farmers market public.  Cozy 70's style ease is the way to go—a cashmere hoodie, sexy-meets-utilitarian boots like these Vintage Tall Frye Brown Leather Campus Riding Boots (buy it now price, $179), and a loose scarf like this Matta Silk and Cotton Scarf (buy it now price, $155) are the way to go. Like Jane, I'll change into moccasins when I get home.
