Grammy style always mixes the genius with the genuinely fashion challenged. Blame it on the music, since some stars seem to forget that it's not your peformance if you're sitting in the audience. There were a few fun ideas that anyone looking for fashion leads should certainly check out. And the Grammys were alive with man style, unlike the Golden Globes, where the guys stuck to the standard tuxedo.

Five top trends emerged at the Grammys:

In her opening performance, Lady Gaga set the stage in an architectural green leotard covered with sparklers. Back on the red carpet, Katy Perry's mocha Zac Posen dress strewn with sequins was sexy and earthy, proving that sequins can be whimsical and not just over-the-top.

Carrie Underwood, who took home a Grammy for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals (with Randy Travis on "I Told You So") and also participated in the Michael Jackson Tribute, was a revelation in liquid gold; Jennifer Lopez was a miss in too-short Versace with a too-long white panel. Still both were on trend, and isn't that what it's all about?

Rich blues looked royal on carpet-walkers as diverse as Mary J. Blige and Taylor Swift in Kaufman Franco, who took home four Grammys (including album of the year for Fearless) and performed with Stevie Nicks. Shades of ocean blue or vivid teal will be even more popular come summer and fall.

Try the Trend: Suzi Chin Sheath (starting bid, $49.55), Tadashi Gown (buy it now price, $490), Royal Blue Sequin Dress (buy it now price, $12)

Skinny times eyeliner for guys' most important fashion statement—but just barely. The skinny tie, as seen on stars like Simon Baker, is a Mad Men-inspired strategy for smarting up a black suit.

The men had the military look all to themselves on Sunday. But any woman can award herself style medals by buying a cool jacket like the ones worn by Jamie Foxx (shown here singing "Blame it On the Alcohol" or Alice Cooper. Scroll through vintage offerings to find this utilitarian look for less.
