Everything old is now in vogue again, so long as it screams nostalgic Americana. Whether it’s retro eyewear, a worsted-wool blazer or a pair of well-worn leather work boots, we're in the midst of a revivalist moment. Brands like Land’s End, Orvis, Pendleton and a whole host of others are dusting off the original garments that once made them America’s tried and true, and serving them up in capsule collections for the fashion elite. And it's not just the cool-again heritage brands that are banking on their resurgence. Some of today’s biggest fashion retailers, like Opening Ceremony and J.Crew, are now partnering with classic manufacturers to create of-the-moment collaborations. But before you start emptying your wallet in order to fulfill your archivist musings, look no further than eBay, which has seen a 106 percent increase in "heritage" listings in the past year alone. We've handpicked a few great pieces from our favorite ages-old brands. Not only is each item built to last, but it has a rich history behind it, as deeply-rooted as the American company that crafted it. Fashion forward and conversation starting? We almost feel like we should keep these heritage picks to ourselves! read more
In our ongoing wedding series, The Inside Source talks to yet another trend-setting bride—this time, a New York-based fashion editor who’s getting ready to walk down the aisle with her book publishing beau in their Michigan hometown—to hear all about the details and inspiration going into their big day. read more
Just days before her Sunday night debut on "Mad Men," we caught up with Porter Hovey, winner of the Banana Republic "Mad Men" Season Four Casting Call. For the contest, fans were asked to submit photos of themselves in character, and then the public voted on a winner. Hovey, depicting a cool, detached suburban New York housewife day-tripping in the city, garnered the most votes from thousands of photographic entries, earning her a coveted guest spot on the show where she was thrilled, among other things, to learn how to properly fasten a stocking to a garter. To anyone who knows Hovey, the win comes as no surprise. She’s a travel-obsessed, vintage devotee with amazing taste who is as comfortable sipping tequila in a west Texas honky-tonk as she is handling Waterford crystal in East Hampton. read more
On the southwest edge of the city and a 40-minute Métro ride from the central Hotel de Ville stop, the Puces de Vanves is a smaller, open air market of anywhere from 150 to 250 vendors that resembles more the laid back Saturday brocantes in the small villages of Provence. With tables set up on each side of the sidewalks, convivial vendors sell a little of everything here from lone dishes to paintings, signed movie posters, vintage jewelry, African art, old records and antique kitchen tools. Note to newcomers: this market runs from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. every weekend. By 2 p.m., an entirely different kind of market of everyday items like shoes, dishtowels, T-shirts and CDs, springs up in its place. read more
Elizabeth Bauer's passion for interior design took her from Vogue and O at Home to her own design practice and red hot namesake shop, described by fellow designer Heather Clawson as "Paris meets Palm Beach." Elizabeth Bauer Design, her cozy-glam West Village shop in New York City, is like a greatest hits collection from Elizabeth's travels (you can take a gal out of magazines, but you can't take the editor's eye away from the gal). With the mix of refurbished antiques and sophisticated wares constantly changing, each visit elicits the thrill of discovering the shop over and over again. read more
Even at the age of six, Southern California-native Jamie Haller’s favorite article of clothing was a beat up, oversized men’s T-shirt. Back then, she stole her dad’s, belted it, and wore it to kindergarten as a dress with fringed cowboy boots. Today, she designs a whole collection of perfectly simple, live-in-them basics for the L.A.-based label Ever. And though you’ll still find her sporting an easy tee most days, she’s traded in those cowboy boots for one of the highly covetable shrunken leather jackets she creates. read more
Lauren Moffatt has come a long way since launching her first collection ten years ago, back when she was sewing each piece by hand in her 31-foot houseboat docked in New York City’s Hudson River. The line has grown many times over since then, and though Moffatt has long since outsourced production, each collection is every bit as cool, feminine, and one-of-a-kind as the first we fell in love with. Recently, Moffatt took time out to chat more about her passion for vintage and how she keeps things fresh after a decade. read more
Nikki Dalrymple’s background as a television producer and set designer for HBO, National Geographic, PBS, and the Discovery Channel prepared this thirty-something tastemaker for her second career as antique scavenger, shop owner, and designer. When Dalrymple moved to Boston with her husband five years ago, she realized she was ready for a change and quickly snagged a job managing Good in Beacon Hill, one of the city’s most impeccably stocked shops (think vintage bowls, John Derian plates, and Mizu jewelry). Soon, Dalyrymple signed a lease on a space in Boston’s North End and Acquire was born. September marks the shops two-year anniversary, and what is surely just the beginning of a thriving design career for Dalrymple. read more
We're in the middle of an all out bicycle boom. Chic cities like Paris, Stockholm and Helsinki have, in recent years, adopted public bike sharing programs. New York City now has its own green belt of bike lanes weaving through the five boroughs, as well as a dedicated city cycling blog and a shop opening this week that specializes in Dutch bikes. Bicycle designers are also making huge strides in form and function, garnering attention in none other than Vogue. The downside to bikes getting trendier and more tricked out is that they're also turning into major investments. There are models that will now set you back more than a sweet ride of the internal combustion engine sort. (A new Moulton can run up to $11,000.) Luckily, whether you are in the market for a back woods mountain bike or an easy two-wheeler to peddle down to the local market, eBay has a great (and affordable) selection of bikes to choose from. We've rounded up some of the top offerings currently up for bids. At the risk of sounding like your mother, just remember: Always wear a helmet! read more
