Go West!

DVF & Isabel Marant

Go west! But instead of rehashing the familiar patterns and vibrant colors of America’s rugged desert territories, try the polished—almost minimalSouthwestern influence that crept onto the fall fashion runways.

Fashion designers traded in plaid, denim and studs for more luxurious fabrications like satin, leather and suede. And while they still showed touches of turquoise, feathers and fringe, those materials felt less casual country than in recent seasons and more reminiscent of the textures seen in stark photographs by artist Georgia O’Keefe of Santa Fe landscapes. (Admittedly, fashion designers couldn't help but toss a bit of disco-era slinkiness into the mix, too.)

Pucci & Fendi

Fall 2011: Emilio Pucci (photo by Elisabetta Villa/Getty Images), Fendi (photo by Venturelli/Contributor)

Isabel Marant offered over-the-knee fringed boots with simple minis, ponchos and separates, most in bone white; while Diane von Furstenberg brought the bolero hat front and center and paired it with tailored, western-inspired pieces almost entirely in black. On the accessories side, Pucci and Fendi presented tooled bags with elegant hardware and chain details.

To hitch your wagon to this West fashion trend, pick a silhouette—from a western shirt to a bolero hat, fringe boots, feather earrings or a hand-tooled handbag—and keep the palette simple, bringing in contrasting black and white or earth tones. As an alternative to turquoise, try onyx or carnelian in a Navajo-inspired silver setting. Bone and horn accessories, a sprinkling of fringe or a stark American Indian motif will bring an organic but glamorous addition to the simplest item.
