Bandage Styles, No Longer Just for the Red Carpet

I am not an Olsen Twin. I stand a towering 5 feet, 7.5 inches. And I have curves. I am more of a Kardashian sister type, well, at least in the sense that my name begins with a “K.” But ever since I saw picture of teeny tiny Mary Kate Olsen earlier this year in her hot pink Hervé Léger bandage skirt, I thought to myself "I can wear this!" and added it to my shopping list.

For those not familiar with the house of Hervé Léger, the brand whose dresses you've surely seen on practically every celebrity and every red carpet from L.A. to NYC, here's a little history lesson: Paris-based Mr. Hervé Léger started creating his signature “bandage” designs in the eighties, and they became a fashion staple for many a super model. In 1998, designer Max Azria of BCBG fame relaunched the Hervé Léger brand under his design direction, which resulted in fashion shows and a new celebrity fan base: Rihanna, Victoria Beckham, and countless others now count bandage styles as among their favorite looks.

While celebs have been gracing the glossies in these skin-baring dresses for quite few years now, the look has only recently started to hit the streets. The thinking used to be that the snug style was only intended for skinny minnies. But in truth, bandage styles often look better when filled out with curves (my imaginary style sister Kim Kardashian has been spotted in at least four of these dresses). Plus, when layered up for fall, the bandage look, which can now be found not only in dresses, but also in skirts and tops, can suit almost every body type: Just pair with dark tights, killer heels, and a jacket for a look that's totally MK Olsen—she's always sexy and always covered up.

My Style Inspirations:

The combo of bright neon and black is oh-so Marc Jacobs Fall 2009.

The big black belt is meant to draw attention to Kim's curves.

A Few Ways to Wear the look:

Brighten Up For Winter

These delicious Skittles shades are irresistible. Try a skirt in coral, mint or neon green (it's more versatile than a dress), and take a cue from January and Jessica and pair with neutral pumps.

Pretty in Pink

Not for the meek, a neon pink skin-tight dress can be toughened up with black accents, or kept ladylike with lighter colors or metallics. Hair should be straight and simple like Megan and Kristin's so as not to distract from the dress.

Rock Star Style

Punky black and white stripes give off an edgy vibe. Wear with a black leather jacket and lots of chains.

For Formal Occasions

Penelope’s dress, by designer Hervé Laroux, is a subtler take on the skin-tight trend. A long style like hers, in a dark shade, works well for a black tie affair.
