Stella Filante's Globally Influenced Valentine's Day Picks

New York’s Lower East Side is where Stella Filante stands, a salvage-spruce ceilinged store on Ludlow Street that’s bringing a global fashion edge to the gritty topography of the neighborhood.
The product of jet-setting sisters, Hasna and Leona Erziak (below, left and right, respectively) who are of Belgian-Moroccan parentage, it foregoes the trendy brands that one would expect in a hipper-than-though section of the city like this one. Instead, it sells exotic creations like the magpie pieces by Indian designer Manish Arora, sunny print dresses of Australia’s Willow and the Gallic bohemian styles of Antik Batik—brands thay may be familiar to the well-traveled or very fashion conscious, but haven't hit the mainstream yet.

However, unlike most stores that cultivate an exclusive aesthetic, the Erziak sisters have a more welcoming mission: “Hasna and I decided to take a global approach to buying because we are constantly traveling and admiring luxury brands from all over the world. We wanted to make these brands accessible to women in New York City,” says Leona Erziak. They also make it their mission to sell only what looks good on women. “We buy based on the quality, fit, and originality of the pieces,” says Hasna Erziak.
When it comes to fashion, its clear that the Erziaks have a specific, yet utterly palatable taste. So we asked them to suggest Valentines day presents that, as we suspected before asking them, would be chic antidotes to the run-of-the-mill roses and chocolates combo.
