Showstopping Styles To Bring Our Your Inner Burlesque Performer

The November issue of Vanity Fair declares, “Cher is back!” And, indeed she is, sharing the screen for the first time since 2003 with Christina Aguilera in the splashy musical film, "Burlesque," opening today. Cher and Aguilera, themselves no strangers to risqué costumes and lavish stage performances, are fittingly cast in a story that revolves around a neo-burlesque club in Los Angeles called The Burlesque Lounge, a majestic and beautiful club struggling to survive. 

Aguilera, in her musical and theatrical film debut, is the small town girl whose talents as a singer and dancer eventually capture the attention of Cher, who portrays a former dancer, and Stanley Tucci, as the club’s stage manager.

Michael Kaplan, the man behind films including "Blade Runner" and the still influential "Flashdance," designed the costumes for the movie.  Kaplan told the Los Angeles Times Times that for "Burlesque," he referenced Surrealist artists like Magritte and Man Ray, but infused the looks with "some humor, some sexiness." He continued, "There’s a skirt made of just garter belts that moves wildly [with the] dancer. It was a lot of fun—it was one of my favorites.”

He even hand-wove gold chains and Swarovski crystals together to create Aguilara’s showstopper costume for the finale and as a result, was commissioned by Nadja Swarovski, who was so moved by his designs, to create a line of jewelry for the legendary house.

The Spring 2011 runways were brimming with lingerie-inspired designs reminiscent of those from the film. Designers like Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel and Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton showed bralets, corsets and tap shorts adorned with girly accents such as lace, ruffles, bows and ribbon. Those elements, combined with more ornamental embellishments such as sequins, beads, fringe and feathers, are what make these styles so enticing, and coincidentally, perfect for the holiday season ahead. Though look references the bygone eras of flappers and cabaret performers, it has been made modern by today’s designers—and relevant by this much-anticipated film.
