Shopping With... Sid Mashburn
For two decades Sid Mashburn influenced the direction of menswear as design director at some of the country’s most successful American labels, including J. Crew, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Lands’ End. In 2007, he left New York to start an eponymous menswear boutique in Atlanta. “I had roots in the South,” says Mashburn, a Mississippi native, “and Atlanta felt very much like I was coming home.”

One part eclectic Parisian taillieur and another part traditional haberdashery, the boutique is a one-stop-shop for rigorously edited, Mashburn-approved classics (Barbour raincoats, Kiton ties, Filson luggage) mixed with his private label. Here slimmer fits, natural shoulders, higher armholes and shorter pant lengths reflect more modern tailoring. An emphasis on detail coupled with a Southern nonchalance and point-of-view that anchor the tension between classic and cool.

And it’s a look that’s found major purchase. Last year GQ magazine named Mashburn one of the ten most stylish men in America, along with Justin Timberlake, hotelier Andre Balazs and actor Jason Schwartzman. Where clients once came to the store by way of an old-fashioned introduction, they now make pilgrimages from states away for a head-to-toe outfitting. This month his wife, Ann Mashburn, a former Glamour editor and assistant to Vogue legend Polly Mellen, will open the women’s counterpart under her name in the Westside Urban Market, the same shopping complex as Sid's flagship store.
