Shopping With... Intermix's Sari Sloane

Sari Sloane has a knack for seeking out the next big thing in fashion, long before it ever goes mainstream—a skill that certainly comes in handy when you’re fashion director of the mega-designer boutique chain, Intermix. The native New Yorker joined the Intermix team back in 2002 (after a brief stint in the buying department at Bergdorf Goodman) and spearheaded the Manhattan stalwart’s coast-to-coast expansion. We recently caught up with the busy new mom to chat about maternity dressing, clothes to help stave off the summer heat and how eBay has become one of her favorite spots for antique shopping.

The Inside Source: Congratulations! We hear you're a new mom…again.

Sari Sloane: Yes, I just had my second girl.

TIS: What were a few of your fashion rules for maternity dressing?

SS: Keep it chic and simple. Less is more: Clean, tailored clothes that hug the body in the right places.

TIS: And what were a few of your closet go-tos?

SS: Skinny J Brand maternity jeans, tailored jackets from Rag and Bone, anything Stella McCartney and comfortable, but very high heels.

TIS: What's your little one wearing?

SS: Stella McCartney for Baby Gap.

TIS: We're in the middle of dressing for sticky summer days, what are five things on your must-have summer wardrobe list?

SS: Great white tees and tanks, long cotton skirts, floral dresses, Missoni kaftans, nude colored bikinis and metallic sandals.

TIS: What are a few trend pieces that we should all indulge in right now?

SS: Summer cargos, menswear-inspired silk shirts and easy summer dresses.

TIS: So if we walked in your closet, what sort of vibe would we get from its contents?

SS: Bohemian luxury. I buy great pieces that I love now, but they will always have a cool element that makes them wearable in future seasons. In the summer, I wear a lot of white and neutral colors.

TIS: What should we be looking for to get a head start on fall?

SS: There are lots of great trends for fall: lots of amazing shoes and cool furs to wear. We love our Brian Atwood Maniacs in army green—an exclusive color for Intermix! We're also excited for the new booties by contemporary designers Pura Lopez and Jean Michele Cazabat. The Chloe OTK boots have us swooning, and we’ve re-cut our best-selling Sergio Rossi peep toe pump in a great new lizard material. And for fur, our exclusive vests from Yves Salomon and Wyler are pretty amazing."

TIS: We hear you’re a pretty big eBay shopper. What are you usually perusing?

SS: I do my best antique shopping on eBay.
