Shop Scout: Yoya and Yoyamart

Sibling—or better yet, spouse—shops Yoya and Yoyamart are two of Manhattan’s most eclectic, forward-seeking children’s boutiques. Located in the ever-trendy Meatpacking District, the stores are a result of two couples' frustration with the lack of local children's stores that appealed to both parent and child.

In 2002, Gena Gerbier and Cristina Villegas Boujnah ("the wives") opened Yoya, a shop offering cutting edge children's fashion—some hard-to-get in the US—along with strollers, toys and modern furniture for the little ones. Two years later, Stephane Gerbier and JD Boujnah ("the husbands") opened Yoyamart (pictured above), a boutique that caters to the older kid from more of a dad-centric point-of-view. Street kicks, urban-artist designed t-shirts, modern furniture and wall decals, art books, foreign magazines, throw-back DVDs and Japanese anime, plus a mother-lode of vinyl toys, all have a place in this colorful space.

Recently, I popped into Yoyamart to say a little bon jour to French-born co-owner, Stephane Gerbier, who I've known both professionally (from my time as an editor at Cookie magazine) and as a customer (my now nine-year-old son is a huge fan) for many years. Stephane, who blogs frequently about his greatest finds at the Yoya blog, has a big personality, a quick-witted sense of humor, and an amazing eye for all things “kid.”

“Children see one thing with their eyes, while adults will see something else,” he tells me when I ask him about the philosophy behind Yoya and Yoyamart.  “This is the thing about [our stores]. We love to have things in our stores that have double meanings—we want an experience for both generations.”

The Inside Source:  I have to say, Stephane, by the eclectic mix of things in the store—both old and new school—you seem like you might be an avid eBay collector….

Stephane Gerbier: I am! The sky is the limit on what you can find!

TIS:  Is there something you hunt for specifically?

SG:  The things I love to check on eBay are the designer toys. Many times I have missed opportunities to get limited vinyl collectible pieces, and eBay is a fantastic barometer for me. For [work-related gifts], I like to buy rare pieces I am only able to find on eBay.

TIS:  Nice to hear you use eBay for work!  Are vinyl toys your only collectibles?

SG:  I also purchase on eBay many deco items for my house.  I scored an amazing Eames credenza, Bertoia chairs and a custom-modified George Nelson dining table.

TIS:   What is the eBay item you were most coveting that "got away?"

SG:  A McIntosh amp from 1978 that had an amazing analog warm sound...

TIS:   What would you buy for your kids on eBay?

SG:  I would buy any lighting from Jonathan Adler.

TIS:  I love wandering around Yoyamart, admiring all the Belgian and French kids fashion and the art books. I also adore the atmosphere; I’m drawn in by the music and art. What are your favorites,  Stephane, so I can add to my list of things to check out?

SG:  For music, I love LCD Sound System, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Kraftwerk and of course, the Ramones! And for art, anything by Yacov Agam.

TIS:  You and your wife not only co-own two boutiques, but you also have two kids, one a newborn. Do you take steps to incorporate art, design and fashion into their everyday lives or do you prefer a more organic approach?

SG:  I would say I definitely take steps to “educate” them, or at least expose them.  I am a true collector of art and design, so I keep most of my really beautiful pieces at home for us to enjoy as a family. Children are really intelligent creatures—I prefer to stimulate them

TIS:  Whenever I run into you,  Stephane, you are always wearing the biggest smile and are super excited about some new discovery. I cannot resist asking this: Even though you have two children, would you say you are the biggest kid in your family?

SG:  YES!  Yes, I am most definitely the biggest kid in my family!
