Sex and the City Style

Whether you're a Samantha or a Charlotte--or a mix of Carrie and Miranda--everyone has got a style personality to match Sex and the City. But as the years go by, it seems that the four main characters' wardrobes have become increasingly outrageous. And by that, we mean, outrageously expensive. (Cut to the montage from the first movie of Carrie trying on about 50 designer wedding dresses, many of which cost more than entire real-world wedding budgets.) Who can even begin to draw inspiration from such impracticality?

The good news: In the latest installment of this quintessentially New York story, the girls—and stylist Pat Field—are getting back to their vintage roots. There plenty of second-hand pieces here, mixed in with lots of Halston (the American fashion house where star Sarah Jessica Parker now serves as creative director of the Heritage line) as well as Zac Posen, Vivienne Westwood and Valentino, to name a few.

For those interested in mimicking each look piece for piece, consider picking up Sex and the City 2: The Stories. The Fashion. The Adventure., a new book that outlines every outfit in every scene. That means there are designer credits for each dress, necklace and pair of shoes, down to the lingerie.

But of course, it's often the look, and not the label, we're really after. We've taken three still shots from the film, which hits theaters May 27, and searched on eBay for pieces inspired by the looks.

1980s Flashback

While Carrie's Madonna-inspired look might be a bit too costume-y to pull off in 2010, there are fun elements to her ensemble that still work in a modern wardrobe:

Roll over items for details
NEW Elizabeth and James
Pairing a plaid shirt with a poufy skirt might not work, but this perennial favorite does look cute topping off a casual summer dress or skinny jeans. Elizabeth and James' boyfriend style is relaxed for a comfortable fit.

2. The Tutu
(buy it now price, $89)
Apostrophe Black Skirt With Tulle Detailing
Yes, grown-ups can wear a tutu. Well, they can wear a formal skirt with tulle underneath, which is close enough. Instead of tying your look together with a corseted belt, try wearing this statement piece with a crisp white button-down and classic black pumps.

3. The Long String of Pearls
(starting bid, $2.99)
NEW Cultured Freshwater Pearls
Pearls are always in style, and Carrie's double layer looks right with just about any outfit, from the ultra-casual to the fairly formal.
(buy it now price, $44.99)

A Vision in White

Unlike Carrie's white dress from the first film, this Halston Heritage number is minimalist. What amps up the 1970s-inspired look? Knock-out accessories.

NEW Victoria's Secret Wrap-Around Daytime Dress
The fit-and-flare shape of this dress flatters many body types.

2. The Aviators
(buy it now price, $32.99)
NEW Gucci Sunglasses
The wrap-around aviator style adds a bit of edge.

3. The Glitzy Clutch

Boho-chic

We wished we looked this glamorous running errands—Here's how you can.

NEW Tahari Pleated Top
Carrie's was a dress, but you can tone the look down a bit by wearing a flowing blouse with a pair of cropped trousers.

2. The Sky High Heel
(buy it now price, $147.99)
NEW Chanel T-Strap Sandal
Make like Ms. Bradshaw and go for a pair of t-strap sandals. This Chanel style comes in always-desirable black patent leather.

3. The Lightweight Leather Carryall
(buy it now price, $399.99)
NEW Chloe Beige "Sally" Bag
While big bags are convenient, they can also be a pain (literally). Switch to lightweight leather in a light color.
(starting bid, $999)
