Sara Rotman, Accessories Entrepreneur and Brand Genius, Shares Her New Year's Resolutions

Sara RotmanSara Rotman is a Renaissance woman. The epitome of the multihyphenate, she is a polo player, an interior designer, a fashion designer and a brand brainstormer. As the Creative Director and owner of branding powerhouse MODCo Creative, which stands for “My Own Damn Company," Sara Rotman does advertising, marketing, logo creation and more for clients like Carolina Hererra, Theory and Kim Kardashian. In her “downtime,” she designs the scarf line Loquita, and right now, Sara Rotman is flexing her interior design chops with a full home renovation of a 1940s bungalow in Santa Monica.  

Sara Rotman's design calendar for 2011 is already booked, between MODCo Creative and Loquita’s ever-expanding agendas. “Crazy busy” is the best way she can describe 2011. “We are very excited to be working with Vera Wang on her advertising and branding efforts; we hope to repeat Loquita's collaboration with Luca Luca; two of our clients (Circa and Century 21 Department Stores) are expanding their advertising efforts to include television, and of course, we have a quite few things in the hopper I can't mention yet.”

Branding design, especially in this ever-crowded world, is so key. Just think what Chanel’s double-Cs or Louis Vuitton’s initials have done for their logos, not to mention Tory Burch's double-Ts—designed by Sara Rotman's MODCo Creative company. Hitting upon the right design ideas seems to be part science, part divine inspiration. “The most important thing is to truly understand the client’s idea and intentions,” said designer Sara Rotman. “But there is a bit of fairy dust involved.” 

She’s using some of that magic on her own designer scarf line, Loquita, which features impossibly cool scarves and pareos for men and women. “I want to make beautiful things for my friends and me to wear and have in our homes,” Sara Rotman said. It’s also a branding experiment for MODCo Creative—creating and branding something from the ground up. Loquita will debut shoes and handbags this year, too.

Sara Rotman's New Year’s resolutions are simple: “To be more efficient with my use of time and to prioritize recharging my batteries with some down time.” She’d also like to improve her Spanish and polo game and wrap up a writing project she’s been working on (remember what we said about Renaissance woman?).

So how exactly will Sara Rotman keep on track in the New Year? “I don't sleep a lot.” She’s also pretty good at sticking to her resolutions. “I'm pretty systematic about setting goals and accomplishing them. Of course like anyone, I'll say casual things like ‘I'd like to lose five pounds,’ and not really do anything specific about it. That said, I don't consider off-handed remarks resolutions. If I write it down as a real goal, I will attain it. Period.”

1970 Ford Bronco:  "I need a rugged yet oh-so-stylish four-wheel drive to get the dog and me up my very steep driveway that is frequently covered with snow. Plus, it’s the perfect barn car for toting horse equipment and navigating the deeply pitted dirt roads at the polo fields.”
