Red Riding Hood: a Timeless Tale with Modern Fashion Touches
Film director Catherine Hardwicke helped bring not only vampires, but also their mythical counterpart, werewolves, into our collective pop culture psyche with the immensely popular movie "Twilight."
But whereas the pack played second fiddle to the coven in the 2008 Twilight movie, it's the medieval werewolf who takes center stage in Director Catherine Hardwicke's cinematic version of "Red Riding Hood," opening today. Based loosely on the fairly tale of the same name, Catherine Hardwicke’s film is poised to instill a fear of dark forests and big bad wolves in adults, just as the legend has frightened children for centuries. And "Twilight" fans who swooned over the story's star-crossed lovers and heightened, otherworldly drama will get their fill of PG-13-worthy passion and fury with "Red Riding Hood" as well.

Scenes from the Red Riding Hood movie feel like illustrations brought to life from a Brothers Grimm book. The voluminous hooded red cape worn by Valerie (aka Little Red Riding Hood) and the regal purple garb of Gary Oldman’s "Father Solomon," who is brought in to kill the wolf that is ravaging the mythical town where the story takes place, are vibrant color pops in an otherwise bare, moody, snow-covered landscape.
Last year, veteran costume designer Cindy Evans took home a Costume Designers Guild award for her work on HBO’s "Temple Grandin". For "Red Riding Hood" the medieval clothing she has created is traditional upon first glance, but styled with rustic, vaguely contemporary style touches such as leather sash belts; hand-dyed open weave crochet belts; and shawls, jewelry and headpieces that incorporate wolf claws and hooves. Avoiding a one-note approach to the time period, costume designer Cindy Evans achieves a stylistic balance by pairing romantic peasant dresses and corsets with tougher, rough-hewn accessories that feel modern.
Coincidentally, top fashion designers made it clear that the cape fashion trends are making a major comeback for Fall 2011. Incarnations ranged from polished, lady-like shapes at DKNY; a sporty striped, zip front style at Rag & Bone; a floor grazing, camp blanket-inspired version at Band of Outsiders and a glamorous, satin-lined showstopper from Alexander Wang.
