Pop Watch

 watches

These days, the idea of wearing a trendy timepiece on your wrist seems akin to watching movies on VHS tape or listening to music on a cassette deck. Checking the time of day is usually never further than a quick glance to the corner of your computer screen, or the cell phone that's practically glued to your palm. Even so, modern watches are ever more popular as expressions of modern technology, taste, style, wealth and status.

Taking their cues from current fashion trends, the latest horological (that's a fancy term for watches) trends tend towards bright colors and surprising silhouettes. Part retro, part futuristic, these bright, fashionable watches fit right in, providing the perfect foil to accent the strong and forward-thinking fashions seen at Prada, Jil Sander, Lanvin and Calvin Klein, among others.

Says Mitch Greenblatt of online trendy watch store Watchismo, “This spring and summer, the appetite is particularly high for brighter than the average varieties after an especially gloomy winter in many parts of the country and beyond. In New York City, where one felt like a shut-in [all winter], everyone is stir crazy for the impending greens, yellows, pinks and purples trumpeting long-awaited changes in scenery.”

Constructed out of unexpected colors and materials, with cleverly designed dials and cases, most of these colorful and fashionable watches are surprisingly affordable (the majority of our picks below are under $200) and will give just about any outfit a major jolt of fun. Adds Watchismo's Greenblatt, whose first brick and mortar retail store will open soon in San Francisco, “Colors are the palette of an era; they define the time they were created in.  It's one of the reasons we love to collect and sell vintage watches—no [current] watch brand can recapture that awesome stale olive color we loved so much in the seventies.  The oranges of the sixties are like no other before or since.  This decade has proven that brightly colored watches are begging to be noticed, with color schemes that could choke a peacock!"

eBay's online auctions are a great place to look out for limited edition watches that are no longer available, older styles, and modern watches that are just hard to come by. Will these high design watches hold their value, become collectors pieces, and remain in style? Only time will tell.
