Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concert Re-cap (Plus: Rock Tees Roundup)

Were there such a thing as Rockstar Heaven, I now know exactly who'd be in it. Going to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 25th Anniversary Concert last night at Madison Square Garden was one of the more awesomely surreal experiences ever. Consider the lineup: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Simon and Garfunkel, and Stevie Wonder headlined; and beyond that the special guests kept coming, from James Taylor to Smokey Robinson to Sting to Bonnie Raitt to B.B. King. To hear “Mrs. Robinson,” “Roxanne” and “Signed, Sealed, and Delivered I'm Yours” all in the same night, all by the original artists... it really was like having the ultimate greatest hits album played out live before me.

There were also some incredible once-in-a-lifetime duets, like when Simon and Garfunkel performed “Here Comes The Sun” with David Crosby and Graham Nash as a tribute to George Harrison. Or when John Legend (after singing the national anthem at Yankee Stadium a couple of hours earlier) joined Stevie Wonder in a cover of Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel." Or when, late in the night (the music didn't stop 'til 1:30AM!), Billy Joel made a surprise cameo as part of Bruce Springsteen's encore to sing "Only The Good Die Young" with him onstage (at which point Bruce joked that the two of them together were like a "bridge and tunnel summit at the Garden").

For kicks, we decided to do a comparison of all the Hall of Famers participating in the concert series (there's a second show at MSG tonight that includes U2, Metallica, Aretha Franklin, Lenny Kravitz, Ozzy Osbourne, Lou Reed, and more) to see which names popped up most frequently on eBay over the past week.

The results were pretty fascinating: in terms of keyword searches, Metallica was far and away the most sought after band among the bunch (more than 86,000 searches!). This leads me to believe that there are way more metal-head shoppers out there than I might have guessed.  Or, another theory: given that Halloween is this Saturday, will we be seeing a lot of heavy metal groupies tomorrow night?)

Second to Metallica in frequency of keyword searches was U2 (75,190), followed by Bruce Springsteen (32,690). The number of search per artist dropped off significantly from there, with but Ozzy Osbourne coming in fourth (5,290) and Sting rounded out the top five at 4,570.

Inspired, I decided to do a little digging of my own this morning, to hunt for rock tees from my personal favorite Hall of Famers. Not surprisingly, the supply of concert tees correlates pretty well with the demand, with the top five live listings for the concert performers and the term “shirt” as follows as of this afternoon: Metallica (1,759), Ozzy Osbourne (327), Bruce Springsteen (376), U2 (680), BB King (61).

Here are my personal picks from what's out there right now:
