Jean Genius! Denim Blog Editor Shares the Season's Top Fashion Trends

On her popular denim trend spotting site (Denim Blog has close to three-million page views a month and growing), she meticulously documents what jeans celebrities are wearing. Canadian singer Drake is spotted in a marbled, worn-in Levi's denim jacket. Actress Rachel Bilson is noted wearing Paige Premium denim jeans, rolled up at the cuffs. Kim Kardashian pairs her Vintage 1 Motorcycle jeans with—what else?—a fur vest and Hermes handbag. And flame-haired Rihanna sports Levi's cutoff jeans, knee high boots and a nude bustier on the set of her new music video. To Lorna Burford, the Denim Blog "is a place where denim enthusiasts can find out what celebrities are wearing, the latest in denim trends and reviews on jeans. It's a huge site full of denim information."

Kim KardashianBurford rates Paige Premium, 7 For All Mankind, Dylan George, Diesel, Citizens of Humanity and J Brand as labels to watch. We tracked the performance of these top jean brands on eBay by comparing listings and sales for these brands from the past week (10/21-10/27) vs. a week-long period approximately one year ago, and it's clear she's on to something: For "Paige Premium ," online listings are up 70% and sales are up 23%; for "7 For All Mankind," eBay listings are up 33 percent and sales are about flat; for "Dylan George," listings are up 250% sales are about flat; for "Diesel" (by far the largest seller of the denim group), listings are up 19% and sales are up 11%; for "Citizens of Humanity," listings are up 15% and sales are about flat; and for "J Brand," listings are up 41% and sales are up 57%.

As for the hot denim trends, she points to skinny cargo pants (as seen on Sheryl Crow wearing Current/Elliott), jeggings ("still very popular and going strong") and flared jeans for Fall 2010. There's also quite a bit of ripped denim jeans on the celebs, like actress Jennifer Garner in slightly distressed Paige Premium Skinny Denali. “It's not too hard to maintain," Burford promises of the shredded styles. “Wash them inside out like you would with your jeans anyway and try not to bend too quickly if you have distressing at the knees as it can break through. Make sure you wash them on a calm cycle and just be a little gentle with them.”

One of Lorna Burford's favorite fashion looks for fall 2010 is denim-on-denim. "The key to getting this look right is to have two completely different shades of denim. A medium-to-light-blue looks great with gray denim. A lighter blue works with a very dark blue or black. You just need to keep the shades as different as possible. Definitely do not pair the same colored denim with each other—it will look like a disaster." You have been warned!

The 22-year-old blogger has close to 150 pairs of jeans stacked in tubs, her closet and in piles near her bed. Of those, Burford has bought over 100 denim items on eBay, mostly Diesel, J Brand and Rock & Republic. "I'm guilty of getting some very good deals on eBay," she says. Her search tip is to look for jeans being sold from established power sellers. "Be vague with your search terms—like Diesel skinny jeans— and lots will come up,” she says. "It just takes time to look through them all."

Lorna Burford's Five Tips for Shopping Denim on eBay  
1. Make sure jeans are authentic; best to shop from a trusted seller.
2. Get as many measurements as you can so you can be certain the jeans fit.
3. Look for clear photos so you know what they really look like.
4. Check the seller's return policy.
5. Make your searches vague (like 'Diesel skinny jeans') as people don't always list them in great detail.

I really like your fashion sense. I'm probably old enough to be your mother...well maybe older sister...lol, but you are a cutie and I love your clothes and accessories. I don't use twitter, but I may have a blog, not sure (I'm technically challenged). If you could help a computer-challenged older sister manuvere her way around these different sites, I would really appreciate it. I don't want to miss out on any of your new things. And, I really hope I win that gorgeous bracelet. I have an avatar. Can you tell me how to post it when I do find my way around? I have taken workshops in color, design, and fit.
