Think Pink: Honeysuckle, 2011’s Must-Have Hue

Pantone, which is basically the end-all global authority on color trends, recently declared its pick for the 2011 Pantone color of the year, a vibrant shade of reddish pink they’ve coined “honeysuckle.” To dig a little deeper as to why and what this means for the rest of us, we went straight to the source: Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute and founder of the Eiseman Center for Color Information and Training.

As it turns out, choosing the 2011  color trend was far more complex than picking something appealing from the Pantone Color Chart. Leatrice Eiseman and her team consider current events, psychology, economics, consumer behavior, and the arts before making their selection: “We look around not only at what’s happening in fashion and entertainment, but at the public’s response to what’s happening in the news and the socioeconomic issues of today. With so much going on and people still very concerned with losing their jobs, we chose a color we felt would be energy-provoking and uplifting,” the color expert said.

And as for where honeysuckle specifically came into play, Leatrice Eiseman said, “This particular shade of pink raises spirits, and several senses are affected by the color. The name is evocative of something that’s sweet to the taste, and nice warm days of spring and summer, and reminds people of the scent.”

While there’s certainly a chunk of the population who tend to be pink-phobic, Leatrice Eiseman points out the even men have gotten more used to pink, with the rise in fashionable pink ties and shirts, and use of pink in graphic design, even on sports equipment like snowboards and skis. “It’s not just a girly girl color,” Leatrice Eiseman said, “and though it’s obviously going to surface a lot in things like cosmetics, it’s also turning up in spring fashion collections from designers like Badgley Mischka and Peter Som, and in kitchenware, and home decor too.”

To get your own taste of the 2011 color trend, experiment with honeysuckle in small doses. “Let’s face it, no one is going to do wall-to-wall pink carpeting,” Leatrice Eiseman acknowledged, “but starting with touches—even a pillow with a hint of a pink flame stitch—works even for the most chroma-phobic.” To that end, we scoured eBay, where perhaps at least in part driven by the recent 2011 Pantone "color of the year" announcement, online listings for the term "pink" are up 13 percent in a recent week (12/4-12/10) vs. a week-long period almost one year ago, for bits and pieces of honeysuckle. Now it's that much easier to get a taste of this revitalizing, cheeriness-inducing hue.
