Happy Green Halloween

Green Halloween

Even the tiniest ghosts and goblins can go green this year; it's easier than ever to organize an earth-conscious Halloween.

I'm personally looking forward to introducing my own two little ones to environmentally friendly behavior in a fun way when we're trick-or-treating this year. My husband and I are re-using vintage costumes (we're going as a cowboy and Pocahontas) and my kids, who will be a tiger and a dinosaur, are dressing in unique Halloween costumes made in organic cotton. We'll be carrying re-usable bags when we go shopping and when we ask for tricks or treats. And we'll be trying out—and giving out chemical-free and certified organic candy in flavors like mango, mint and pomegranate. Here's a Halloween tip sheet for having a happy Green Halloween.

Happy Green Halloween

1. This cute, lightweight tote folds up into a festive pumpkin shape. Use it to do your pre-Halloween shopping and then re-purpose it for trick-or-treating for years to come.

2. This orange-and-black striped cotton sleeper is a chic and subtle way to dress your toddler in Halloween colors. It's made from organic cotton.

3. Yes, it's possible to have a green Halloween and eat candy, too! Hand out these fruit lollipops made not with chemical dyes or artificial flavors, but instead with ingredients such as organic apples.

4. For “Twi-hard” fans of the Twilight books and movies, here's an organic-cotton T-shirt that serves as an easy costume idea.

5. Finding used costumes for kids of all ages not only provides a unique dress-up option, but it also allows you to re-use items that otherwise might be thrown away. Among the 1,400+ eBay listings with the term "vintage Halloween costume," we found options ranging from this skeleton mask costume to a pin-up girl to a Tom and Jerry costume from 1940. Insider Green Halloween Tip: listings of “vintage Halloween costumes” tend to peak on eBay around 6-7pm Pacific Time. That's when you might find the broadest selections.

6. Need some environmentally friendly Halloween décor ideas? Try hanging vintage masks (there are 2,600+ listings on eBay) on your front door or walls. Re-purposing these used items helps keep them out of landfills when the holiday is over. Of course, you can always wear them this year or for Halloweens to come!

7. If you're planning a big Halloween bash, the task of providing dozens of earth-friendly cloth napkins might be too hard to manage. As an alternative, try picking up a case of these adorable recycled paper napkins printed with water-based (i.e., non-chemical) inks.

8. Here's another example of a green Halloween treat: certified organic mint candies. They're sweetened with brown rice syrup and evaporated cane juice, and made without artificial flavors or dyes. Pick up a bulk bag to hand out.

9. Keep the Halloween spirit going all month in your kitchen with these organic-cotton towels emblazoned with festive, yet elegant, pumpkin images.

10. For a truly sustainable Green Halloween project, plant pumpkin seeds. It's too late to harvest this year's jack o' lanterns, but you'll be able to enjoy them next year, both to carve as decorations and to serve up as homemade fall soups and pies.
