Shine is everywhere this season, thanks to designers like Balmain and Gucci, who showed glimmering and shimmering looks on their Fall 2009 runways. But the new metallics, spotted on the models and then quickly on celebs, are not about throwing a few gold sequins or silver beads onto a dress and calling it fit for a party. This year, the new metals are more sophisticated, darker, and often inky or mineral-like.

So, how do you keep gold and silver looking classy (instead of brassy) and mimic the coveted styles seen on stars Jada Pinkett Smith, Kim Kardashian, Sienna Miller and Disney star Demi Lovato? The trick is to look for shades that are not a pure gold or silver, but rather mixed with black and grey or have a have burnish effect. Look for studs, tightly packed, allover sequins on a black backdrop; or dark fabrics with metallic threads sewn directly into them.

My eBay tip: To find this trend in eBay’s fashion listings, avoid generic color terms like “gold top” or “silver dress.” More descriptive colors based on shades inspired by the celebrity looks we love, including “gunmetal," “pewter,” “antique gold,” and “bronze” netted some of the covetable clothes and dresses here. And to get an ever more exact look, adding even more specific terms to your color search, including “sequin,” “knit,” “leather,” “silk” or “fitted.”
