Summer Classics: Espadrilles
Originating in Spain, espadrilles have been around for centuries—a pair owned by the Archaeological museum of Granada is thought to be around 4,000 years old. While this style of shoe was worn and handcrafted in Spain and France throughout the 19th century, it wasn’t until the 1950s and 1960s that the espadrille became truly fashionable.
Fast forward to the present, and the style has become a beloved summer staple. High-end designers like Christian Louboutin carry platform versions spring after spring, while more mass brands like Nine West continually experiment with more manageable styles.
With their combination of more lightweight fabric uppers (most often canvas) and jute and rope bottoms, the espadrille offers an irresistable combination: comfort and cool.
