Suddenly Everywhere: Denim Accessories

It wasn’t so long ago that wearing denim in any form other than jeans earned you skeptical second glances from passersby. But like so many other former fashion faux pas—mixing silver and gold jewelry, for instance, or wearing white after Labor Day—this “don’t” has become a “do” with major staying power.  

Almost a decade ago, the idea of jeans as a designer item worth splurging on grew into a widely accepted notion. For many years, it was only OK to wear one denim item at a time. But more recently, mixing your denim shirt with your denim jeans became not just acceptable... but cool, as long as you wore different items in different shades. So it seems like a natural progression, says New York-based jewelry designer Dana Lorenz of lines Fenton and Fallon, that you’d start to see this trend creeping into accessory collections from designers both large (Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Lanvin) and independent (Dieppa Restrepo, Kooba, and her own). “Denim is really insane right now,” says Lorenz, who collaborated on J. Crew’s newest spring jewelry collection and included a grouping of chain and frayed denim necklaces in her own line. “Partly because it’s so versatile, it lends itself to almost any style or personality: it can be punk, urban, prairie, rock.”

Yalenis Cepeda, head designer of the New York-based fashion denim line Charley 5.0, adds that denim’s underlying coolness plays into the unexpected draw of seeing denim as a bag or shoe—even swimwear. “Denim will always be cool,” says Cepeda. “But now, it can be cool and sexy or cool and retro, which are both vibes that are so unexpected and great from a hair accessory or a clutch.”

But at its core, denim is about the comfort and ease you feel when you have on your favorite pair of jeans. And now that ease translates into a huge range of spring accessories that work whether you pair them with those jeans or anything else in your closet.
