In the face of the cold fronts, snowstorms and gray skies blanketing most of the country, we feel it's high time for a dose of fashion trend vitamin C.  It was a tangerine dream on the runways for Spring 2011, with orange making an appearance in virtually every fashion designer's runway collection. And if Ken Downing, Fashion Director at Nieman Marcus is correct in his proclamation that “orange coral is the color of the season,” we’ll be seeing orange fashion in stores everywhere in the months ahead.

There were deep persimmons at Lanvin, dusty saffron hues at Fendi and hi-octane neons at Prada. Fashion designers Karen Walker, Max Mara and Versace were fearless in their presentation, with complete head to toe oragne looks, while Gucci opened its show with a bright orange jacket and continued to use orange fashion as a punctuation mark throughout the collection. Jill Sander designer Raf Simons showed no restraint, presenting bold, volumetric pieces including a blood orange floor length mermaid skirt. (We dare you!) For many top fashion designers, among them Proenza Schouler and Cynthia Rowley, collections veered towards more traditionally wearable hues, but not without two or three orange power chords in the mix.

Celebrities are embracing the orange fashion trend right out of the gate, perhaps giving the rest of us a green light to take the citrus plunge. Or maybe we already have—in a recent week on eBay (1/22-1/28), sales for orange online auction items in the Clothing, Shoes and Accessories category were up 27 percent and listings were up 32 percent vs. a week-long period two months prior.

But, if you’re still feeling that an orange addition to your wardrobe is one with zero fashion mileage, try orange accessories and pair them with khaki, white or denim, all of which were big hits for spring as well. For even less commitment, follow in the footsteps of Zac Posen, Marc Jacobs, Jill Stuart and several other top fashion designers who used an orange lip color for their collections. Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury commented on the orange fashion trend, telling Stylist.com, “It suits most people. It’s more modern than last season’s red lip and it compliments every skin tone and makes your eye color pop. It’s incredibly effective!”

Paint the town orange with these eBay finds.

Orange is one of the trends I am most looking forward to this spring. I love, love, love how designers played with orange and I'm especially fond of the Zac Posen striped dress seen above. The orange accessories will also play a key part in my spring wardrobe.
