Fashion Week Report: Statement Coats

Jeremy Laing, Frank Tell, a Fashion Week attendee
During the winter months, choosing a coat is a case of function over form. At least for those of us mere mortals, the chosen piece is a puffy down parka that we can rely on to keep us warm. Not so for the fashion folks: Statement making coats were the style armor of Fashion Week attendees for combating yesterday's cold winds. And as is often the case during this twice yearly industry showcase, the audience and performers were in sync, as the runways were filled with equally memorable outerwear options.
Today, as I checked in at the lobby of Milk Studios in the Meatpacking District for presentations
by Julian Louie, Jeremy Laing, Tim Hamilton and Frank Tell, I couldn't help but notice the contrast of the veritable parade of showstopping outerwear in line with me compared to New York's usual sea of black. There was a woman who wore a grey coat with shoulder pleats that created a dramatic a-line silhouette, an editor in a cropped filigree jacket, and several men wearing slim trousers and dramatic cape-like numbers, and a woman with a whose textured jacket looked about to burst into flames (see above, right).
At the actual shows on the 8th floor, Canadian Jeremy Laing’s black textured covering looked like fur meets feathers meets shaggy wool. He also showed a coat with swirling prints and fur with random splashes of orange hues. While Laing’s architectural design lexicon was evident, Frank Tell’s diaphanous dresses seemed to have given way to a textural overload of large knitted sweaters that parried nicely with his short skirt hemlines and draped trousers. His neutral palette of grays, blacks, and off-whites allowed the shape of his meticulously rendered pieces to take center stage.

Elsewhere, Jen Kao’s take was olive green with huge lapels and even bigger shoulders; Jason Wu went for splatter paint; Doo.Ri showed orange with an outsized label; and Preen also went with mannish and strong shoulders. But the real outerwear drama was front row habitues Alexandra’ Richards voluminous fur and Blogger Julia Frakes' Indian motif coat.
To make sure you stand out from the crowd, here are five coats to keep you warm and looking on top of your style game.
