Fashion Week Report: Narciso Rodriguez's Winning Minimalism

Yesterday's tundra-like weather didn't stop fashion's finest from lining the stairs on icy Sixth Avenue to await entrance to the Narciso Rodriguez fashion show. Clutching their fur coats tight, their urban winter warrior wear showcased a mix of high and low style among the layers. Sally Singer, Vogue’s Fashion News Director, revealed was wearing velvet pants and sharp gold wedges under her cozy puffer, while Vanessa Friedman, the raven-haired Fashion Editor of the Financial Times, combined an oversized fur coat with sturdy snow boots.

While the crowd did battle with slush-covered hats and scarves, Rodriguez proposed more simplified ways to combat winter weather. But don’t be fooled; as is the case with Rodriguez every season, each piece is even more than meets the eye. His cashmere and slick leather coats curved sensually to accent the waist and featured panels artfully fused together. Helmet-like black hats topped many of the models' heads, giving uniformity to the looks but avoiding the feel of a uniform. Dresses and tops were constructed with different materials in contrasting colors, yet looked as if they were in Zen-like harmony. Sharp geometric cuts were well placed to allow a sensual peek-a-boo of the shoulders. And a repeated use of ombre on dresses and jackets cast elegant shadows on the pieces and were all the prints and patterns this collection needed.

Among our favorite pieces: a little silk dress with curved seams that looked demure in the front, yet had crisscrossing bands of silk to provide ample skin exposure for unexpected drama; and a fiery orange and black silk dress artfully draped to show a slit of skin at the breast bone.

With their outerwear peeled off, it was easy to spot the high-wattage attendees—a mix of media folks, socialites and stars—including Fabien Baron of Interview, Carine Roitfeld of French Vogue, musicians Jeff Beck and David Byrne, designer Tory Burch and New York society fixture Helen Lee Schifter. They clearly reveled in the collection as much as the rest of us—and they can afford it. For those of us who can't (or who don't want to wait until fall to scoop up Rodriguez's winning minimalist works), we'll be shopping the Narciso Rodriguez for eBay collection, the designer's newly launched line made exclusively for eBay and priced from $65 to $350.
