Fashion Week Report: McQueen's Passing Casts a Somber Mood

With the tragic passing of British designer Alexander McQueen casting a somber mood over the first day of New York Fashion Week, it was difficult to navigate through the city without thinking about his influence. As one of the most talented designer of his generation, McQueen's theatricality, outlandish silhouettes, vivid use of colors, and impeccable craftsmanship have been a welcome spectacle each and every season since he was discovered by his dear friend, the late Isabella Blow. Though designers in New York can happily admit to being influenced by McQueen's progressive propositions, few have put that level of awe inspiring creativity into their work, especially here in commerce focused New York.

The show must go on, however. BCBG Max Azria's tonal dresses with flailing asymmetrical hemlines and Ports 1961's romantic dresses will certainly satisfy their loyal customers. So will Richard Chai’s wonderful and utilitarian take on American sportswear, Lutz and Patmos’ supple knits, and Vena Cava’s more glamorous take on what hip girls wear. [See our profile of the Vena Cava gals.] But all are far from McQueen’s boundary pushing design vision.
And just as aesthetics can be forward thinking, John Patrick’s Organic line proves that, ethics, too, can be a vehicle to provoke thought as to how we consume. Made with mostly sustainable materials, the highlights included mannish Harris tweed jackets, checkered trousers, slouchy tops, floral printed blouses, and easy throw-ons such as turtlenecks and cotton shirts. Although stylistically worlds apart to McQueen's dramatic fashion ouvre, Organic is propelling fashion forward to a more ethically conscious future. Good enough for us.
There are over 10,000 clothing items on eBay with the listing term "organic" and even more when bring in other categories. Here are three of our picks.
