Fall Trend Report: Accessories

We're the last ones to complain about slower days at the office, weekends at the beach and relaxed summer styles, but a peek at the calendar recently gave us quite the start: autumn is just days away! Take solace in the fact that with fall comes cozy fall dressing—sumptuous sweaters, luxe coats and of course chic accessories like tall leather boots and double-wrapped scarves you could almost disappear into. eBay has seen "fall" listings double in the past few weeks, so we've broken down five must-have fall accessories trends, with tips on how to shop wisely for them, so you'll have a few dollars leftover for a weekend jaunt to see those changing leaves.

1. Leopard

The cat's out of the bag. Leopard is the hottest spot in town. The puns can go on endlessly, but that doesn't take away from the classic print's staying power. It's shown up everywhere on runways this season, from its natural home at Dolce & Gabbana to even avant garde labels like Dries Van Noten. Not surprisingly, eBay has seen listings for the pattern leap 63 percent over this time last year. If a leopard print coat is out of your budget, then try a spotted accent such as a tote or scarf. The key is to look for the right print—either stick with the classic (the mini print looks too much like cheetah) or opt for a daring bit of unexpected color.

2. Loafers and Brogues

Ladies, after oh so many seasons of skyhigh platforms and ankle-busting booties, how's this for a change: the return of the lovable loafer! The style has seen a 29 percent increase on eBay since 2009, and what better way to complete your menswear-inspired look? Add some preppy polish to the usual office blouse and trousers ensemble with a pair of penny loafers or brogues. When shopping, stick with a classic silhouette. They come across richer and give off a chic heritage vibe. Trendy ladies can try cuffing and letting a pair of thin socks peek from beneath.

Chanel Chain Bag
(from $290)
NEW Gold Chain Knot Headband
(buy it now price, $27)

3. Chain Detail

Metal embellishments have been going strong for the last few seasons now, but this fall, skip over-the-top studs and grommets for something more subtle. We like the delicate effect of a chain fringe bracelet or you can't go wrong with a simple chain link handbag for night.

4. Frame Handbags

After several seasons of laissez-faire dressing, it's a relief that polished ladylike fashion is back. A quick way to get the "Mad Men"- inspired look is to go for a frame handbag, a category that has brown by 41 perfect since this time last year. The retro feel is perfect for vintage lovers (and is quite the bargain for those with a penchant for exotic skins). We found one in vintage crocodile that we're quite mad about.

5. Lace-Up Combat Boots

If ladylike isn't your thing, then try an, ahem, alternative style in the '90s grunge revival. The perfect uniform for hanging on the weekends? Worn-in jeans and oversize plaid tops with tough, perfectly broken-in combat boots. This time around, skip the Dr.Martens and pay attention to leather treatments. If you're up for wearing in your own, why not go for the real thing such as the Hara boots below. Otherwise, take a less literal spin with a high heel or glossy patent finish.
