Fall Accessories

Yesterday, we kicked off a two-part series on fall fashion accessory trends with a look at exotic-skin handbags and glamorous gloves, two unabashedly luxurious styles guaranteed to kick any ensemble up several notches. Today, we consider two equally important, but perhaps more flexible styles—pointed-toe shoes and long earrings. Both super-feminine styles have their roots in fancy formulations, but can also be playful and a bit more relaxed.

Pointed-toe shoesa fashion look we last obsessed over back around 2004, though then the shapes were much more severeran the gamut from subdued (lower heels, muted tons) to dramatic (on extreme platforms or in bright, show-me shades). Dior’s electric blue croc and leather over-the-knee boots and Nina Ricci’s corseted ballet-inspired pumps both had slightly upturned, chunky pointed toes complemented by equally delicate (but severely stick thin) platform stiletto heels. At Fendi, the pointed toe was also strong, but the overall look of the gold leather t-strap shape was more understated. We've been seeing ankle boots everywhere for several seasons, but Thakoon's in graphic prints and pointed-toe shapes felt brand new.

Speaking of refreshing... It was fun to notice long earrings emerging as the jewelry trend of the fall season, especially after so many seasons spent celebrating statement necklaces and bold cuffs. Dressed up or down, the fashion trend works for day or evening. Fashion designers presented a variety of options, from dangly Victorian briolettes at Dior to polished, oversize jade teardrops at Ralph Lauren. Marni’s earthy drop discs and Dolce & Gabbana’s sequined jet tassles both took long literally, with designs that nearly grazed the shoulders.
