Soonjin Park

Born in Seoul, Korea, fashion designer Soonjin Park has pushed the boundaries of convention since she was a child, wearing her father’s slacks and experimenting with other shapes to see what kind of silhouettes she could create. She went on to study fashion and eventually begin her own line, Eloq, where she fine-tuned her aesthetic and a philosophy of design she calls “borderless.” She refers to her discovery of designer Yohji Yamamoto as a “breath of fresh air,” and says of his design approach, “He could use masculine fabric and a 'colorless' palette, with no confining silhouettes, and still portray femininity.”

Since 2007 Park has been at the creative helm of Kai-aakmann, a unisex line for men and women that combines elements of classicism and avant-garde design. Park is driven by the possibilities that exist within any given piece when worn by both genders: a classic one-button double-breasted jacket on a man becomes something completely modern on a woman. The collection, while sophisticated and minimal with precise tailoring, is infused with Park’s love of youth culture, evidenced in her use of playful proportions and volume, fabrics that are wearable and comfortable as well as the occasional graphic print or blast of color. “I grew up free from any dressing conventions which lead me to push boundaries and experiment,” says Park. “Youth culture has a unisex sensibility that is genderless, timeless and ageless. My customers are not confined by those elements, which is a very youthful attitude.” The Fall collection introduces shearling accents, which add texture to the sleek lines of her parka and asymmetrical wool cropped jacket. The trousers of the season have a fullness that tapers to a slim leg. Balancing the modernity of the trouser are classic outerwear pieces like the trenches, down coats and wool topcoats.

Despite the decidedly urban sensibility of her collections Park mines a great deal of inspiration from nature, specifically, she notes, “the colors and freedom of expression brought on by the change of each season.” At home, she surrounds herself with a small veranda of plants as well as “art, portraiture from flea markets around the world, trinkets and chairs.” She hopes one day to own the Egon Schiele reprint she has hanging in her house. She found one here on eBay and although not “the one” we wonder if she’ll take the leap.

Kai-aakmann is available at Neiman Marcus and Saks as well as independent shops including Fred Segal in LA and Oak in New York. For an extended stockist or to view the collection, click here.
