Cushnie et Ochs on Fashion Inspirations and First eBay Purchases
Both Vogue and W have used the descriptor "New Guard" to describe Cushnie et Ochs' Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs. High praise indeed, considering the ladies launched just a few seasons ago (Spring 2009). The two met while students at Parsons, where in 2007, they actually competed against each other for the coveted senior title of Designer of the Year. Ochs won and Cushnie came in a close second. It wasn’t until later that they decided to combine their substantial creative forces.
Cushnie et Ochs' particular aesthetic—body-con, uber sexy and minimal—has been celebrated with an Ecco Domani win and Fashion Group International finalist spot. The brand is carried by such venerable retailers as Bergdorf Goodman in New York and Browns in London. And fashion insiders from top magazine editors to Tavi, the teenaged wunderkind blogger, vie for a spot in the designers' front rows. Cushnie and Ochs' ascension through the fashion ranks is well on its way.

The Inside Source: You've had some heady inspirations in the past. What was your fall 2010 fashion inspiration and how did it translate into ready-to-wear?
Cushnie et Ochs: Fall 2010 evolved through exploring raw materials and juxtaposing textures inspired by Darwin's imagery and Tony Cragg's sculptures. Combining gritty and dynamic elements with a moody color palette radiated a primitive sensibility.

The Inside Source: What are, respectively, your favorite pieces from fall 2010 and why?
Cushnie et Ochs: The Silver fox fur and knit jacket — it's the perfect amount of comfort and luxury all in one piece. And also the Taupe cross-over dress looks amazing on everyone.
The Inside Source: How would you describe your collection for spring 2011?
Cushnie et Ochs: A beautiful darkness….

The Inside Source: You both come from different places and experiences. [Cushnie is from London and Ochs is from Maryland.] What are your main fashion differences and similarities and how do they complement each other?
Cushnie et Ochs: We have always had a very similar aesthetic although Michelle tends to be more tailored and structured and [Carly designs] with more drape. And even though we grew up in different places, we both have strong love for art and architecture.
The Inside Source: In nearly every glossy monthly, you've been tapped as part of the “New Guard” in fashion. I imagine it must also add a little pressure. Has that changed how you approach each season?
Cushnie et Ochs: It definitely hasn't changed how we approach designing the collection. But we are extremely appreciative of the support and to have our work recognized.
The Inside Source: What is next for Cushnie et Ochs?
Cushnie et Ochs: Accessories would definitely be next on our list, but it's a while away as we don't want to expand the company too quickly.
The Inside Source: Where do you find fashion inspiration? Do you ever use eBay as a means of research or inspiration?
Cushnie et Ochs: We find inspiration everywhere — there's not one particular place—from art to books to people on the street. And the Internet has become an amazing resource tool.
The Inside Source: Do you remember what your first searches/purchases were on eBay?
