Celebrity Makeup Artist Kerry Malouf: a Natural Look and the Beauty Buys You Can Only Score on eBay

Los Angeles-based celebrity makeup artist Kerry Malouf embodies that natural, I-don’t-even-have-to-try-to-look-this-good, surfer-girl look. So it stands to reason that she abides by a beauty philosophy to match. “My goal with cosmetics is to enhance that natural glow that starts within and create a ‘no-makeup’ makeup look," she told us.
The 43 year-old professional makeup artist, who moonlights as Malibu Magazine’s beauty editor, got her creative start at American College of Art and Design in London. Before long, the lure of crashing waves brought her back home to Los Angeles, where she applied to a program for makeup artists at Universal Studios and scored the last available spot. “It was so hard,” she said, “but because of that frustrating yet powerful training, color is in my soul.” It was there that she mastered the art of subtly matching makeup to skin tones while still allowing the skin’s natural radiance to shine through—a look that would eventually become her signature and garner her a roster of celebrity clients that includes Emmy Rossum, Ginnifer Goodwin, Anne Hathaway, Keira Knightly and Amanda Seyfreid, among many others.
Celebrity Makeup by Kerry Malouf
These days, the color celebrity makeup artist Kerry Malouf feels most deeply in her soul is green. She uses eco-friendly and organic beauty products whenever possible, and is a fan of eco-friendly product lines such as Josie Maran Cosmetics, W3LL People, Arcona and Shobha. “What you put on your skin can be nearly as important as what you put in your body,” she said.
For Spring 2011, Kerry Malouf says it’s time to move on from glossy red lips and dark, smoky eyes—two looks she’s totally over. Instead, she suggests keeping makeup matte for spring and using light, citrus shades for a pop of color on cheeks and lips.
To get the barely-there celebrity makeup look Kerry Malouf is known for, start with a tinted moisturizer or light foundation to even out your skin tone. (She recommends Jouer Mini Luminizing Moisture Tint.) “Use concealer as an eraser,” she advised, “but keep it light. Let your freckles show.” Then add a little sheer color to your cheeks and lips with a multi-use cream such as Jouer Tint in Amarylis. For natural eyes with a touch of luminosity, Malouf likes Urban Decay Shimmer Sticks. “Finish the look with a sweep of black mascara—you can’t go wrong!”
