When the going gets tough, fashion gets even tougher—with leather. That was certainly the case this past weekend at New York Fall 2010 Fashion Week. Though Ohne Titel’s collection, which showed on Saturday, "wasn't as hard-edged as their previous efforts," according to one editor, designers Flora Gill and Alexa Adams nevertheless succeeded in conveying a strong message, with leather corset belts and panel pants and suits. It's clear the duo wants to break out from niche terrain into something more commercial—but the masterful construction techniques seen in their fusion of wool and leather in several pieces wasn't lost on a high-wattage audience made up of powerful members of the blogeratti, American Vogue girls, the New York Times crew, and even Carine Roitfeld, the editor in chief of French Vogue.

While Ohne Titel’s new approach was noticeable, Elise Overland didn’t depart too far from her rock and roll roots. Her leather dresses and jackets in red and black with outsize shoulders stayed true to the former music stylists sexy, body hugging aesthetic. Red hot label Altuzarra, too, was pulled into the sadistic look of leather.  With American Vogue's Anna Wintour in attendance, the young Joseph Altuzarra opened with a series of showstopping leather and goat hair trimmed coats. Then, he got down to business with sleek black leather dresses, a Catwoman like catsuit and fitted pants, which all had a number of panels that seemed to have been sutured together. This theme also appeared as strings crisscrossing across deep necklines of dresses and tops.

Elsewhere, Victoria Beckham’s architectural outing received major kudos from the industry on Valentine’s Day. Although refined, elegant, and luxurious are appropriate descriptions for Beckham’s collection, attendees were all about tough-looking black leather shoes. A Japanese stylist wore Christian Louboutin pumps that were engulfed in studs; a journalist wore slouchy boots; and Avril Oates, the chic buyer for Harvey Nichols in London, wore above the knee boots that commanded even more attention than her voluminous fur jacket.
