Fashion Icons to Inspire a New Year's Ensemble

Stumped for your New Year’s Eve ensemble? Get inspired by some of the most iconic style makers from the last century. We’ve chosen nine fashion muses—one from each decade since the 1920s—and found dresses that will help you steal their looks. Whether you choose to embrace flapper style pioneered by Louise Brooks, Rihanna’s envelope-pushing outfits, or anything in between, these choices are so timeless, they look as spot-on today as they did the first time around.

1920s: Louise Brooks

The epitome of 1920’s flapper style, famed dancer and silent film star Louise Brooks gave us her trademark bob and Charleston-worthy wardrobe. Channel your inner Follies girl with this black tutu dress. When you pair it with opaque black tights, your favorite strappy heels and a classic red lip, there is no question that your dance card will be full all night.

1930s: Bette Davis

With her immaculate hair and makeup and dramatic sense of style, Bette Davis defined Hollywood glamour. A white lace number similar to hers, but with a modern ruffled skirt (gloves optional) will definitely heat things up come December 31st. Don't forget your curling iron and sparkly waist-cinching belt for added ‘30s impact.

1940s: Veronica Lake

Actress Veronica Lake, 1941, wearing a glittering gown for her role as Sally Vaughn in “I Wanted Wings,” directed by Mitchell Leisen (Photo by John Kobal Foundation/Getty Images); Bold Shoulder Lace Dress (buy it now price, approximately $18)

Inspiring characters including Jessica Rabbit in “Roger Rabbit” and Kim Basinger as call girl Lynn Bracken in “L.A. Confidential,” Veronica Lake was the ultimate bombshell. Despite her boudoir-inspired attire, she nevertheless managed to look tasteful and not trashy. Take note from the sex symbol and opt for this lace, long-sleeve, form-fitting dress. Strong shoulders balance the high hemline to achieve a bold party look.

1950s Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn’s lady-like fashion choices stand the test of time. Forego the “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” route in favor of this demure, 1950’s style frock. Pick a dress with a strapless bodice, tapered waist and full skirted silhouette like this lace and sequined style from Betsey Johnson. Wear with minimal jewelry and pulled back hair, as this shape speaks volumes on its own.

1960s: Twiggy

The original waif, Twiggy’s mod style consisted of a pixie haircut, oversized earrings and mini skirts. For a less formal soiree, choose the decade’s dress of choice, the shift. To avoid looking too costume-y, steer clear of psychedelic patterns and graphic accessories. Instead, go with a solid or classic black-and-white dress and pair with modern-day shoes and simple jewelry.

1970s: Bianca Jagger

A fixture at the infamous Studio 54 and Mick Jagger’s former wife, Bianca Jagger will forever be associated with ‘70s style. When not sporting a menswear style suit, another look she pioneered, she wore glitzy disco garb. Paired with soft curls and strong lips, this  metallic number will light up the dance floor.

1980s: Madonna

From her jelly bracelets to her cross pendants, the Material Girl’s bold and often controversial fashion moves have never gone unnoticed. Wearing lingerie inspired pieces, like this bustier dress, is a great way to revive the decade of excess. Skip the crucifix necklaces and biker gloves and pair a corseted dress, in a festive color like this green version, with minimal accessories.

1990s: Kate Moss

Nineties It Girl and Calvin Klein muse, Kate Moss was the poster child of minimalist chic. Known for her skin baring slip dresses and boyish frame, the model, whose fashion choices still make waves today, was the face of a generation. Take her no-fuss approach to dressing and keep your look simple with a long, colored satin frock. Wear hair in a sleek chignon to keep the focus on your dress.

2000s: Rihanna

The 21st century’s most significant fashion plate  to date, singer Rihanna has become quite the style risk taker. An asymmetrical piece like this one will ring in the New Year with more than a few turned heads. Strong eyes and a nude lip along with bold rhinestone accessories are the way to go with this statement making dress.
