How to Wear the Enduring Tribal Trend

Like other fashion trends that just won't go away (polka dots, color blocking, Native American, neon and American heritage, to name a few), tribal prints are once again a wardrobe must for fall. The bold, vibrant shades we saw for the last several seasons have shifted towards dark, moody tones infused with the occasional splash of color, high contrast black and white and metallics. There’s also a distinct move away from ikat, Indian block prints and southwestern motifs towards more intricate African-inspired tribal patterns with touches of Mexican, Peruvian and Tibetan influences thrown into the mix.

Tribal patterns bode well for fall’s heavier wools and knits, as seen in the collection of Proenza Schouler whose fashion designers, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, used tribal prints in the majority of their designs, including bags and shoes. Marni's Consuelo Castiglioni worked within a similar dark but earthy palette. At Hermes, a Navajo-inspired print was woven into a kaleidoscopic pattern that appeared in a head-to-toe fashion look and as an accent on outwear. For his last collection for the House of Balmain, Christophe Decarnin embellished black knitwear with sequins and paillettes to create the glamorous textured, tribal patterns that defined the always sex-charged collection.

A few ways to try the tribal fashion trend: Layer tribal patterns such as chunky knits over slinky dresses, with tribal patterns in one (or both!) pieces. (A dark. rich palette means patterns are less likely to clash.) A bag or shoe may be all you need to satisfy your taste for the trend. And while long earrings are having a moment, try a bold-patterned pair and hit two trends in one.
