CULTURE

The Force is with eBay

Two of my earliest movie moments are being celebrated on eBay via charity auctions worth pointing your light sabers at (er, bidding on).

Star WarsFirst, to celebrate the release of the "Star Wars: The Complete Saga" on Blu-Ray this week, eBay has partnered with Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to launch a dedicated destination page for Star Wars on eBay. Given that every two seconds, a Star Wars-related item is sold on eBay (the search term "Star Wars" is more popular than "Justin Beiber" and "Harry Potter" combined!) the move makes serious sense.

Fortunately, the page is everything you want it to be: Naturally, you can link to shop for all things "Star Wars", from LEGO sets to collectible figures and video games. You can pre-order the Blu Ray set (note to self: buy multiple copies for various holiday gifts). You can take daily trivia quizzes and participate in photo sharing contests for the chance to win prizes. And starting Friday, you can bid on rare merchandise and VIP experiences, with all proceeds benefiting Stand Up to Cancer and its work on cancer research. Auction items include a one-of-a-kind Star Wars-edition 2012 Volkswagen Passat (US only) and a pair of sold out VIP tickets to Star Wars Celebration VI in Orlando.

Second... Now any kid who grew up in the '80s had one of two idols: Hans Solo or Marty McFly. If you were in the latter camp, now is your chance to snag a pair of those mythical Nike MAG shoes, originally worn by Michael J. Fox in "Back to the Future II". In an ongoing auction, you can bid on one of 1500 pairs of Nike MAG shoes, with proceeds to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation and its efforts to end Parkinson's disease. Click here to bid, and to see a new "Lost Scene" developed by the film's creators.
