Lauren Moffatt

Lauren Moffatt has come a long way since launching her first collection ten years ago, back when she was sewing each piece by hand in her 31-foot houseboat docked in New York City’s Hudson River. The line has grown many times over since then, and though Moffatt has long since outsourced production, each collection is every bit as cool, feminine, and one-of-a-kind as the first we fell in love with. Recently, Moffatt took time out to chat more about her passion for vintage and how she keeps things fresh after a decade.

 

The Inside Source: Where do you get your inspiration?

Lauren Moffatt: Before I design any collection I think about what I want to wear, and what I’d like to see a girl walking down the street wearing. I wish I had a more romantic story about where I come up with my inspiration, but for me it’s a little more organic, rather than some big metaphorical thing that happens every season. For fall, my inspiration turned out to be a grandmother’s closet. I liked the idea of a closet that spanned many different eras and styles but had a common thread of being procured by one person. A closet where there might be something avant garde, something simple, something classic. In one delivery I did very classic colors like navy and cream, but with a twist to make it feel Lauren Moffatt in the end. The other delivery was very neutral with taupe, grey, and peach. It’s soft and timeless. I kept coming back to the idea of creating clothes that were modern, but that if someone kept them in her closet, 30 years later her kid would pull it all out and look just as cool wearing them.

 

TIS: What are you most excited to wear?

LM: The terrific capes in taupe and peach and a navy with red trim with awesome vintage-inspired bugle buttons that keep them shut at the top. I can’t wait for production to come in and for it to cool off so I can wear it!

 

TIS: So is vintage a big inspiration?

LM: It is. I used to go to thrift shops and shop for vintage buttons and things to use for our clothes but my business partner would yell at me for spending so much time looking for different buttons to go on all the different pieces. But now that’s not an option anymore with our production. I still use vintage a lot, but more for the overall feeling of a collection. I’m not looking for where a bow might have been placed, but just the overall vibe.

TIS: Does eBay come into play when shopping for vintage?

LM: It does. I use eBay now more than ever. It’s gotten really hard to find good pieces at thrift shops from the 50s, 60s, even 70s and 80s. But eBay is great because you can narrow down exactly what you’re looking for, and I use the related search button to find even more things I might have otherwise missed. I hang out and look for design inspiration on the site at least a couple times a season.

 

TIS: Then does eBay come into play more for your professionally than personally?

LM: Not necessarily. I’ve ordered some great things for myself, like the mid-century, teak credenza I have at home. I won it by a dollar! It has these two clear sliding glass doors but I cut wood to put behind the glass and painted one cream and one orange. It was such a great find. And I’m always looking for jewelry. I love pawn shops but eBay is like a giant pawn shop to me. Even better because the options are truly endless!

TIS: What kind of jewelry?

LM: Usually gold rings, a little bit bigger rather than dainty. I love rose gold. And I love bands. Despite the fact that you can only wear so many I love thick Victorian gold wedding bands. I have a daughter and I even found a little gold baby band for her. I could have spent hours combing flea markets for that stuff but now I can do it right from home and find some much more than I’d ever hope!

 

TIS: What else are you hunting for?

LM: I’m always looking for shoes. I was obsessed with the perfect pair of clogs a couple seasons ago. In fact, I’m still looking! I’m always looking for children’s clothes too. I get my daughter all these funny, weird handmade dresses from the 40’s that look like something my mom would have worn, and I’m able to track them down on eBay for as little as 99 cents!
