Jeffrey Monteiro

Designer Jeffrey Monteiro wears many hats. After years of designing for now-defunct label Mayle and as a rising star at Derek Lam, the Australian-born, New York-based Monteiro relaunched his own collection in 2008 to the applause of store buyers and customers alike. (His line is stocked at retailers like Barneys CO-OP and Satine in Los Angeles.) To top it all off, late last year, Monteiro accepted the position of Creative Director at Bill Blass. His first collection was Resort 2011, but the revamped line will make its big-time debut at New York Fashion Week this September.
We recently chatted up the designer, who gave us some insider info on his fall inspirations, his upcoming shoe collection and how meditation keeps him balanced.

The Inside Source: What's your thought process when you're putting together a collection, such as fall?
Jeffrey Monteiro: Every collection is different in its approach. The inspiration for some collections are set early and progress that way with others it develops and informs itself within the process. With Fall 2010 it was a combination of both. I had revisited some images I had in my archive of Robert Polidori's photographs of Versailles from the 1980s. I loved the color, lines, and composition of these images. These images were the reference point for the collection from the colors and textures of the fabrics to the lines of the garments. Whenever I had a question about the collection I came back to the images for inspiration and resolutions.
TIS: How is Fall 2010 different from your past collections?
JM: This collection further develops ideas from previous collections. It’s also about experimenting with different ideas or elements which will inspire future collections. I like challenging my thought process and knowledge to learn and grow.

TIS: Do you shop on eBay? If so, what kind of stuff do you look for? Do you ever find inspiration in things you see on the site?
JM: I do shop on eBay. I look for things I am collecting or fascinated by at a particular time. It can be picture frames, sunglasses…and I buy furniture on eBay. I also look for vintage accessories, especially shoes. As I am developing my shoe line I look for vintage shoes for hardware inspiration. I used to collect Adidas trainers and eBay was my enabler.
TIS: You juggle creating a total of six collections a year. How do you stay balanced?
JM: I meditate twice daily and when it comes to within a few weeks of a collection being due, I give up sugar. The first week is tough but then it balances me out.
