Dear Santa: Todd English's Holiday Give and Get List

Todd EnglishOur Series on What Today's Top Stylemakers Plan to Give—and Hope to Get!—for the Holidays

While Chef Todd English started out unassumingly in Charlestown, MA (yes, of Ben Affleck’s The Town fame) back in 1989 at a still-standing restaurant called Olive’s, these days he’s more about big business and chef celebrity—along with the art of cooking in the kitchen.

Chef Todd English, a Culinary Institute of America- and La Côte Basque- trained chef and four-time James Beard Award winner is undeniably a powerhouse. Though he is credited locally with bringing sophisticated flavors to Boston and training other Boston culinary geniuses (including town sweetheart Barbara Lynch), his place is really on the national stage. Today, Chef Todd English owns 24 restaurants around the country, has published three cookbooks and has created a top-rated cookware line. He also hosts the Emmy-nominated PBS travel series “Food Trip with Todd English,” which wrapped its second season earlier this year. Traveling occupies half his year, which is no surprise once you've taken a look at a roster of "Food Trip with Todd English" episodes that includes some serious jaunts: Tel Aviv, the Amazon rain forest, the Peruvian Andes, New Delhi and Tuscany.

His newest establishments are the Todd English P.U.B. in Las Vegas, the European-inspired Plaza Food Hall by Todd English at the Plaza Hotel in New York City, (which also encompasses a wine bar, market, and demo kitchen for cooking classes and demonstrations), and Ça Va, a French-inspired brasserie in New York’s theater district.

Back home—in between traveling for "Food Trip", collaborating on cookware with HSN at its Tampa, FL offices and spending time in New York City—Chef Todd English lives in a renovated carriage house on Boston’s Beacon Hill. There, he has been working on some down-home goodness: Isabelle's Curly Cakes. The shop, named after his daughter, is set to open next month, right in Chef Todd English's neighborhood. On the menu? Red velvet, carrot, Tahitian vanilla, toasted coconut and more.

This celebrity chef's holiday give and get lists are, not surprisingly, inspired by things Chef Todd English loves (good food, drink and family) and things he longs for (time), with a few surprises thrown in for good measure.

GIVING

1. Cupcakes: "My daughter Izzy’s Curly Cakes cupcakes They’re delicious and always a crowd pleaser."

2. Dom Perignon Champagne: "Bottles of bubbles are always well received and make people happy." Chef Todd English likes Dom Perignon and Krug.

3. Osetra Caviar: "Osetra is the best caviar and goes great with the bubbles."

4. Todd English Cookware Sets: "Copperfused Gourmet Cook sets from my GreenPan Cookware collection. The pans are non-stick, so they help to cut down on [the need to cook with] extra fat during the holiday feasting."

5. Holiday Heart Ornament: "I created glass, heart-shaped ornaments with HSN to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and children with cancer.

GETTING

6. Fender Guitar: "A new Fender Blacktop Series Guitar. I love to play."

7. Dom Perignon: "Bubbles for me too, please."

8. Vacation: "A plane ticket to the beach and a week off from work. Whoops is that two wishes?!"

9. Monopoly: "To spend the holidays with my family—my three kids, Oliver, Isabelle, and Simon, and my mother, Patty." Perhaps English and Co. will bond over a classic board game or two.

10. Wagyu Beef: "A home cooked meal made by someone other than me. Sometimes I need to sit back, relax, and just enjoy the food, rather than prepare it." These steaks sure look delicious, though we'd rather eat at Olives, of course.

Isabelle's cupcakes are delicious. My personal favorite is Boston Cream. The shop is adorable too. Great job by architect Andrew Falkenstein. The cupcakes are quite large and the coffee is good. Grab one of the two tiny tables, and watch the people go by on Charles Street. Will definitely brighten up your day.
