The U.S. Open, one of the biggest events in tennis, kicks off today at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York City. It’s the fourth and final “Grand Slam” championship this year, and should be an exciting tournament.
The big story for this year’s Open is the rise of Novak Djokovic, who has been on an incredible winning streak this year, including taking the Australian Open and Wimbledon, two of the other “Grand Slam” tennis tournaments. Djokovic, born in Serbia, lost the U.S. Open title match to Spaniard Rafael Nadal last year, but beat Nadal in the final at Wimbledon earlier this summer.
Djokovic is currently the favorite to win this year’s U.S. Open, as of this writing, with Nadal in second and Roger Federer in third, according to sports betting site Bodog. On the women’s side, Serena Williams is the favorite as of this writing, but she continues to suffer foot problems.
This year’s U.S. Open will also commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, with the men’s final scheduled for Sept. 11, 2011. A white “9-11-01” will be painted next to the court, according to the AP. This ball was used (and signed!) by Federer at the U.S. Open. Played a day later after being postponed by rain, Rafael Nadal beat Novak Djokovic to win the U.S. Open for the first time in his “Career Grand Slam.” This is the magenta dress that Serena Williams wore in 2009—a U.S. Open she’d like to forget, since she lost in the semifinals after an outburst directed at a line judge. The dress is available in sizes XS, S, M, and L. Play tennis like a champ—or just look the part—in this pleated skirt from the fashion designer's popular athletic line. Show your love for tennis in the office with this photographic mouse pad. Nadal is the current U.S. Open champ, and is the second favorite to win this year. Part of the U.S. Open experience is taking the no. 7 train from Manhattan way out to Flushing, Queens, where the Open is held. These commemorative MetroCards include iconic players Patrick Rafter, Lindsay Davenport, Martina Hingis, and Michael Chang. Add a little style to your tennis game with this two-layer dress, including an outer mesh. This unofficial U.S. Open shirt is a play on the iconic New York Subway graphics. Glaser is best known for the “I Love New York” logo, and for co-founding New York magazine. The poster was created for the 2008 U.S. Open. Sampras won five U.S. Opens, most recently in 2002, when this neat-looking vintage ad was supposedly created. A provocative print from a provocative player. Williams is expected to win this year’s U.S. Open, which would be her fourth victory. Go craft crazy with these small commemorative patches. For the most devoted Serena Williams fan, a cornerstone of any collection. Djokovic is tennis’s fastest rising star. This giant, signed tennis ball will make a statement. On his way to this year’s U.S. Open, Djokovic won Wimbledon. This photo shows a happy celebration.
