“The Real World” Rewind: 25th Season’s Return to Vegas

Sometimes what happens in Vegas doesn’t stay in Vegas. Ironically, it was the 12th season of reality show “The Real World”—with its cameras in tow—that helped make that now-ubiquitous slogan a household phrase. It’s been almost 10 years since that crazy season aired on MTV. And tonight, "The Real World" reality TV show returns to Sin City for its 25th season to prove that, actually, sometimes what happens in Vegas airs worldwide.

This year’s "Real World" cast of seven lands smack-dab in the middle of the Vegas Strip, staying in a luxurious penthouse suite at the Hard Rock Hotel. (The last Vegas cast stayed at the Palms, in a suite that now rents for as much as $10,000 on weekends.) Conveniently for "The Real World" housemates and Hard Rock’s publicity department, they’ll also be employed by the hotel as marketing interns working on a variety of local events.

The construct of the wildly successful reality show is, as "The Real World" intro puts it, a group of seven strangers “picked to live in a house … to find out what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real.” Historically, in true reality TV, drama-creating form, the subjects of the 24/7 filming have been chosen for their extreme differences. This time around, MTV appears to have chosen the season’s 20-something "Real World" Vegas castmembers for what they have in common.

Each of these seven "Real World" Las Vegas housemates has dealt with family or personal drug problems. Their shared history, cast members say, helped them bond more than previous casts. “Hearing other people’s stories, hearing what other people went through and kind of relating to certain things made it easier for us all to adapt to the situation,” they told the Las Vegas Sun. “It was easy to be yourself.

But although MTV may have slightly altered its tried-and-true “Real World” casting formula, MTV producers made sure to keep many things the same. For instance, "The Real World" cast is once again staying at a famous hotel on the Vegas Strip. Their penthouse suite even contains past season essentials like a giant hot tub, pool table, bowling alley and fish tank. The girls claim a room they dub the “Princess Pad,” while the guys are left with the “Peasant Pad” (the smallest room in the house) and the “Man Cave.” All of the rooms, including the confessional room and the phone room, flow into the main living area, where cool grey tones temper the bright orange accessories and crazy shenanigans.  As producer and creator Jon Murray told the Sun, the jaw-dropping suite is “the ultimate party loft and undoubtedly serves as the eighth roommate.” (images courtesy of MTV)

When "The Real World"'s Adam was only 16 years old he was caught in a drug robbery and served three years in a juvenile detention center. After petitioning the governor to be allowed to take college classes, Adam received a dual degree in Criminology and Political Science from the University of Southern Maine.

 

Dustin
Age: 24
Hometown: Rayne, LA
After being raised by his bipolar mother and abusive father, "Real World" castmember Dustin found a way to leave his small town by accepting an offer to be filmed for an X-rated website—a personal choice and history that he’s kept secret until now.

 

Heather
Age: 21
Hometown: Delran, NJ
Heather dealt with the stress of her brother’s struggle to overcome a brain cancer diagnosis by drinking; she was hospitalized with alcohol poisoning when she was just 14. Now that everyone in her family is healthy, Heather has gone on to major in Communications and Information Technology at Monmouth University.

 

Leroy
Age: 25
Hometown: Detroit, MI
His birth mother’s alcohol and drug abuse led Leroy from "The Real World" to be taken away and put into foster care when he was just 10 years old. Although he didn’t attend to college, he is employed as a sanitation worker and hopes to someday move to California and become an actor or personal trainer.

 

Michael
Age: 23
Hometown: College Park, MD
"The Real World's" Michael bounced from house to house as a child because of his parents’ drug abuse and subsequent jail sentences. Still, he helped raise his seven siblings and managed to put himself through college at the University of Maryland, where he majored in Rhetoric and Agribusiness.

 

Nany
Age: 21
Hometown: Jamestown, NY
Nany’s dad was in jail on drug charges before she was even born, so she’s never met him. The Criminal Justice major, who dreams of one day becoming a parole officer, hopes to someday find the biological father she’s never known.

 

Naomi
Age: 22
Hometown: Bronx, NY
Although her parents succumbed to the temptation of drugs that plagued their local neighborhood, Naomi from "The Real World" escaped by working hard to attend college, where she served as the president of her sorority. She has also interned for entertainment companies and would like to someday be a television reporter.
