Festival Fashion at SXSW

South by Southwest (SXSW) celebrated its 25th year in Austin, TX last week with more parties, events and crowds than ever. Featuring multi-day conferences devoted to Music, Film and Interactive, the 10-day 2011 SXSW program had fresh-faced geeks hitting up networking events and listening intently to speakers; movie goers racing from short film showcases to world premieres; and music fans perched in clubs, cafes—even boutiques, bike shops and food trucks—to hear both headliners and emerging acts throughout what is known as the Music Capital of the World. (Not surprisingly, on eBay, online auction sales for SXSW-related items—from SXSW tickets on eBay to t-shirts to music memorabilia from festivals past and present—shot up five-fold in the 30 days ending March 18 compared to the prior period.)

The glorious weather (80-degree and breezy) was an invitation for the tens of thousands of attendees to test their summer wardrobes. We spotted plenty of of-the-moment summer fashion trends—from “flatform” sandals to macramé bags, floppy hats and bold color—but it was classic summer dresses with bohemian undertones that caught our eye: tunics, halters, ethnic prints, and hand-embroidered linen, all made special with unique fashion accessories.

The vibrant hand embroidery adds color and detail to this otherwise simple linen smock dress. We love the contrast of the bright ribbon trim and floral patterns accessorized with tough lace up boots, a bold turquoise stone ring and a simple black tie bracelet.
