Pop Culture Tracker: Late Night Fights and More
This week, our Pop Culture Expert is taking a look at how buzzed about topics in TV drama, late night talk shows and style are faring on eBay.
The Wire

HBO just announced a new show called Treme, produced by David Simon, creator of The Wire. Named after neighborhood in New Orleans and pronounced Tre-may, the show is about jazz musician living and playing in a post-Katrina world. If it is anything like The Wire, then we can expect hardcore story lines, gritty imagery, and hyper real acting. Actors Wendell Pierce and Clarke Peters (pictured above) from The Wire are attached to Treme as are actors Steve Zahn and Melissa Leo. As a fan of The Wire, I am thrilled that HBO will have another groundbreaking drama in its lineup.

Jeggings (Denim Leggings)

A new word has entered the fashion vernacular this fall—jeans plus leggings equals jeggings. The problem with jeans is that they can be too bulky to tuck into boots and too stretchy to achieve that super skinny look that's so popular right now. Considered an ideal solution by teens, adults and plenty of celebrities (like Taylor Swift and singer Ciara), who have worn them like a uniform this season, jeggings offer the look of jeans and the comfort of a legging. Plus, unlike some leggings, they won't make you look like you're running around without pants on.
The eBay Stats: 21 related listings for jeggings; 1,554 related listings for denim leggings; close to $50,216 in jeggings sales and 39,414 jegging-related items offered in the past 90 days

Jay Leno vs. Conan O’Brien

The late night wars are back on in a big way. Once upon a time, it was all about Leno vs. Letterman, but this week, the headlines are all about Conan and Jay and their dueling time slots on NBC. The network wants to push Conan’s time up to accomodate Jay in his original 11:30 slot. O’Brien is having none of that. Conan put the kibosh on the proposal and says that he will not be hosting the Tonight Show at 12:05 A.M…(He has a point, as 12:05 A.M. that does not really translate as “tonight,” but rather as “tomorrow.” The two nighttime heroes have longstanding fan-bases, and I am sure that wherever they go, their audiences will most certainly follow. Leno leads the red-headed stepchild on eBay (lots of car enthusiast swag), while Letterman falls right in between the two. Poor Jimmy Fallon trails behind them both.
The eBay Stats: 802 related listings for Jay Leno and 497 related listings for Conan O'Brien (vs. 710 related listings for David Letterman and 298 listings for Jimmy Fallon); close to $39,000 in Leno-related sales and 8,697 Leno-related items offered in the past 90 days; $2,477 in Conan O’Brien related sales and 7,543 Conan O’Brien-related items offered in the past 90 days
