Hang It Up: D.I.Y. Wall Art Installations

Sometimes, collecting and hanging art can be more time consuming, intimidating, and costly than finding the right furniture and accessories. Most of us have moved beyond dorm room posters (I hope!), yet lack the confidence and funds to curate original artwork. But that doesn’t mean you’re doomed to live with blank walls. Nor must you unearth ancient family photos in hopes of turning a trip down memory lane into an ancestral installation.
You could check out some of our ideas for affordable art on eBay. Or, you could just dig through your storage closet for inspiration. Everyday household items are anything but humdrum when you hang them in groupings. Seriously. Pretty much any cluster of objects, from license plates to baby bonnets, can be turned into a killer montage. These items will add color and texture to your walls, and can add a sense of history to a space or tell a personal story. Plus, giving new life to old objects is a very earth-friendly thing to do.
Los Angeles-based interior designer, set designer, and prop stylist, Kyle Schuneman had admired the effect of a single tennis racquet hanging on a wall, so he decided to amp things up and create a pattern with multiples. He says, “With all the hard lines in the bedroom, I wanted to add some subtle curves. I thought the vintage, worn feel would complement the masculinity of the bedroom.” He found a bucket of old tennis racquets for less than $5 each at a flea market. Then, he took it one step further by having a glass guy replace the strings with mirror. The whole production cost less than $75.
Charleston, South Caroline interior designer Adrian Sims Truluck of Parker-Sims Interiors just last week completed a project in which she used twelve vintage ceiling tiles that she found at a local architectural salvage shop in a decorative series on a stairwell. She says, “I always like to mingle vintage or antique objects into a room, especially if they are everyday objects. They have a unique sense of character and charm that you just can’t get from new pieces. The key is to train your eye to find the extraordinary in the ordinary.”
Boston-based artist and interior designer Lindsay Bentis of Thread Art and Design found inspiration where many East Coast scavengers are known to flock, the thrice-yearly Brimfield Antique Show in Brimfield, Massachusetts. Bentis tells us, “These are old rolling pins form India. They have such great patinas and colors. I would use them as objects just sitting on a surface as well as hang them on the wall as an art installation, like I did here. I also think they would make a cool mobile.”
