Geeking Out with Sarah Lane

Producer/host/writer/tech expert (not to mention cat lover and world traveler) Sarah Lane is one of the tech industry's finest gurus. Her career began in TV segment production, where she transitioned from interviewing and prepping others to talk about all things geeky to sitting in front of the camera and doing the talking herself. With stints at cable channel Tech TV, gaming channel G4, and internet TV network Revision 3 under her belt, her most recent gig was at cross-platform media company Current TV, where she was from 2009 until recently. There, she oversaw the Current Tech Channel, a resource for tech news with a sense of humor and pop culture twist. 

Lane contributes regularly to shows on podcast network on Twit.tv and is developing new content for the channel. She's also in the early stages of developing an independent video project, but tells us "Before I do that, I'm going to Japan for a couple of weeks to marvel at how far ahead of the U.S. they are gadget-wise. Akihabara, here I come!"

I caught up with the avid blogger and Twitter-er (33,000 followers and counting) upon her return from SXSW, where she was hanging with her fellow bleeding edgers of cool.

 

Cat Schwartz: I remember when you were a producer back in the Tech TV days. How did you get your start?

Sarah Lane: I majored in broadcasting in college and got my start writing in a newsroom at then-NBC affiliate KRON-TV in San Francisco.  A couple years later TechTV (formerly ZDTV) hired me to manage segment production for their flagship live, daily show "The Screen Savers", and during my time there, I eventually moved into an on-air role in conjunction with producing in-studio and field segments. When Comcast bought TechTV and merged it with G4, I moved to Los Angeles and became the first female host/producer of live, daily variety program "Attack of the Show!" 

Eventually, I kind of left the TV part behind to jump forward into the web medium full-time as the Director of Production and host of pop culture show "popSiren" at one of the true pioneers of Internet television, Revision3. I also created, hosted and produced the popular web show "This Week in Fun" for the tech-centric streaming network TWiT, and produced dozens of on-air reviews, rants, news updates for Current TV's Internet tech channel. I still do TV appearances here and there, but Internet TV, in my opinion at least, is so much more exciting because you can do whatever the heck you want. Then again, the money part's still tricky. I know it sounds trite, but working really hard and making good contacts early on is the key to success this biz. Very few people just get lucky.

 

CS: And what are you working on now?

SL: You could technically call me a lady of leisure, because I'm in between full-time projects right now. But I am in the planning stages of creating some sort of web series that will be fulfilling to produce and will be loved by people far and wide. Oh, and pay the bills. Sounds easy enough, right? 

 

CS: I have total faith in you that whatever hits next is going to be fantastic! I know you were just at SXSW. See any cool new tech, bands or gadgets?

SL: What I found most interesting about my stay in Austin was my lack of Twitter use (I'm usually pretty addicted). Because of Foursquare and Gowalla's newest app features (commenting, pics, etc), I felt like I could communicate with my friends within those services almost exclusively, and not annoy all my Twitter followers who weren't at SXSW. I'm really enjoying the geolocation explosion right now. Wow, I'm a nerd.

As for music, one of my very favorite bands, The Walkmen, played the Diggnation party on Saturday night. They've been around for awhile but were as good live as I remembered them. It's pretty cool when a well-known band like that wants to be part of such a geekfest!

Also, I got a Foursquare Crunked badge tattoo last night. Ok fine, a temporary one. 

 

CS: Sounds like you had a great time. I know you were packing the goods. Which gadgets did you take with you on your travels to Texas?

SL: My iPhone & my Macbook Pro and my HD Flip Video with a tripod.  Looking back, it's interesting because I realize that honestly, I could have left my MacBook Pro at home and done everything with my iPhone if I had to. I love consolidating all my tech toys into my back pocket.... literally.

CS:  I'm with you on that. Are you excited about the new iPad?

SL: Oh yeah! I can't wait to get an iPad but waiting for another chump to get the buggy first version.  Once it all gets worked out you'll see me with mine.

CS:  Do you ever buy or sell on eBay? If so, what?

SL: I'm considering selling my wedding dress on eBay. It's beautiful and there's no point in keeping it because I'll never wear it again. I've done some price comparisons so I know what this designer/style (it's a Monique Lhuillier) generally goes for on eBay. Problem is, I had it altered to fit me, and I'm a very small person. I bet she's out there though.
