CULTURE

Weekend in Copenhagen

Glam rockers George Harrison and Eric Clapton had it goin’ on while disembarking from their private jet at the Copenhagen airport in 1969. Even then, the city was a chic destination for restless creative types, though its draw goes back much further than that—ever hear of Hamlet? Copenhagen blends a fairy tale charm with sleek modern design, and romance is everywhere, at times making it seem like the Danes have spent an eternity cultivating beauty. Castles where the Danish monarchy still dwell sit alongside charming centuries old row houses and important 20th century architecture. Meanwhile, cobblestoned streets are full of beautiful people, all perched high on bicycles, pedaling around town no matter what the weather.

You'll want to visit tourist destinations like Tivoli Gardens, which inspired Walt Disney to create his own theme park; the world famous Little Mermaid statue in the harbor (based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale), and Freetown Christiania—a controversial hippie commune smack in the middle of a city known for it’s cannibis trade. Shop trendy neighborhoods for Euro fashions, French antiques, and, of course, Danish modern furniture. Have drinks outside—wrapped in a blanket when it gets chilly—or enjoy a summertime Danish BBQ spot down by the canal. One of the world's most enchanting cities, Copenhagen is sure to stay with you long after you leave. Here, a collection of chic Copenhagen-inspired treasures that are almost as good as being there.
