Facing Up To 2011 With Celebrity Makeup Artist Ramy

RamyCelebrities and beauty editors have been flocking to Ramy for his "Minimum Makeup, Maximum Impact!" transformations for years. Naomi Watts, Debra Messing, Nicole Richie, Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Marisa Tomei are just a few high-profile faces made gorgeous by Ramy, whose work has been seen on national television shows including "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "Entertainment Tonight." Ramy, who has been called an "Eyebrow Guru" for his brow-sculpting skills, also boasts a New York City makeup and brow spa, along with his own cosmetics line, a wearable, skin-conditioning collection of brushes, powders, blushes and more you can buy here

He talked with us about how to look beautiful in the new year.

The Inside Source: OK, lay it on us! What are the key makeup trends we need to know about right now?

Ramy:

Complexion Perfection 1. Complexion Perfection: While beautiful skin has always been "in", the difference this year is you’ll want to look naturally flawless, not matte, powdery or made up. How best to achieve this look depends on your skin type.  For normal skin, go with a tinted moisturizer. For oily/combination skin, use a liquid-to-powder foundation or mousse formula. For dry skin, try a tinted moisture cream or liquid foundation. All skin types can benefit from applying a light reflective highlighter or luminizer to cheekbones to achieve a healthy glow. Favorite products: Maybelline Dream Mousse, RAMY Sleep in Beauty Tinted Moisture Cream or Liqui-Powder Elixir foundation, Armani Lasting Silk foundation

Bold Brows2. Bold Brows! Strong, full, and well groomed continues to be the way to go! Carey Mulligan (Photo by Jon Furniss/Contributor)

Favorite products: Ramy Perfect brow wand, Clarins Pro Palette Eyebrow Kit, Ramy Eye Grow Brows

Bright Eyes3. Bright Eyes: Bold eyeliner—whether brightly colored or textured (glittery, pearly or shiny with a satin finish)—will be huge, particularly on the upper lashline. Think classic Audrey Hepburn with a modern twist! Eyelashes continue to be dramatic, though dramatic lash extensions will be relegated to special occasions only. Apply mascara to your heart's content on the upper lashline, while leaving the lower lashline either mascara free or with minimal mascara for a very clean, eye-opening effect.  Audrey Hepburn (Photo by Barry King/WireImage)

Favorite products: Bobbi Brown Gel Liner, Covergirl Lineexact Liquid liner, Nars Eyeliner, RAMY Perfect Eye Wand

Natural Cheeks4. Natural Cheeks: Cream blushes will be very popular, keeping in line with a dewy, flawless complexion. Powders will be popular too, but only in light, natural-glow shades.   Emma Bunton (Photo by Richard Lewis/WireImage)

Favorite products: Chanel Powder Blush, NARS Multiple Stick, RAMY Whipped Liqui-Air Blush

All or Nothing Lips5. All or Nothing Lips! Go for lip glosses in both nude and ultra bright hues, but be sure to use only very sheer shades. The big difference this year is that glosses will be more conditioning, long-wearing and will have a more sophisticated shimmer (high definition). On the flip side, we will also see a return to classic red lipstick. Jenna Dewan(Photo by Ethan Miller/Contributor); Emmanuelle Chriqui (Photo by Kevin Mazur/Contributor)

The Inside Source: We've heard you've turned to eBay to help you in your work.

Ramy: I've used eBay for inspiration several ways over the past few years. A few years ago, I was thinking about putting together little makeup kits that would house the look on the cover of the kit, and I thought it would be cute to emulate romance novels, so I ordered some on eBay. I also collect out-of-print books by great makeup artists, former models and photographers. eBay is always a great resource for that. In fact, the cover of my book, "Beauty Therapy—The Ultimate Guide To Looking and Feeling Great While Living with Cancer" was inspired by a famous photo Scavullo took of Janice Dickinson with half of her face bare and the other half dramatically made up. It’s in Scavullo's book, "Women" which I originally found on eBay.

When looking for inspiration to develop new products or colors, I'll do random searches on eBay, like "vintage cosmetics," which turns up vintage powder compacts and great ideas for cosmetic packaging. It shows me the feel and style of the era and helps get my creative juices flowing. Whenever I want to find anything rare or vintage, eBay is the first place I look!

The Inside Source: What motivated you to write a book about living with cancer?

Ramy: I survived Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma 12 years ago. I worked every day through treatment and at the tail end of it, the salon where I worked fired me saying, "You're not the pretty boy we hired". It gave me the idea for the book and also was the catalyst to starting my own brand!

The Inside Source: Wow that’s really incredible. Good for you! What do your clients most often ask of you? What do they want from makeup?

Ramy: Most want to look naturally beautifulnot made up. Everyone wants to look effortlessly glowing with beautiful skin and eyes and lightly glossed lips.

I love how other people put make up on but when I put it on it looks different then what I expect . People say I shouldn't wear make-up because I have a natural face & I would love to know what you think ?
