If you didn't get to travel this holiday season and have resolved to book something for the New Year, stat, we have some suggestions for hotel rooms you’ll be happy to hole up in.

Conversely, if you’re sticking close to home for the time being after a whirlwind trip, perhaps the spaces might offer inspiration for a redecorating project.

Each of the 61 rooms at the Hotel Fox in Copenhagen is a unique work of art. The hotel enlisted 21 artists to create environments that encompass a myriad of styles, from graffiti street art to Japanese Manga to fantastical fairy tales. Room #409, created by Swiss illustrator Benjamin Güdel, is one of our favorites. His theme is literary kitsch: the story of Heidi, which happens to also have a wholly American feel.

The Arte Luise Kunsthotel in Berlin has been dubbed a "gallery where you can spend the night." All the rooms in the hotel have been individually decorated by over 50 artists, but don’t get too attached, as most rooms are re-commissioned every two to five years. The candy-colored Panorama 360° was designed by Brooklyn-based German artist Markus Linnenbrink. The watery, slightly drippy stripes are typical of his style, which can be found in paintings, as well as on the walls and floor of the visitors’ tunnel of the new Justiz Vollzugs Anstalt, a prison in Duesseldorf Rath, Germany.

If you’ve ever romanticized the life of an Eskimo, a trip to Hotel Kakslauttanen Igloo Village in Finland will likely live up to the fantasies. Located 155 miles above the Arctic Circle in Finland’s Lapland, the igloos, which are constructed from a special thermal glass, keep the warmth in. Plus, it doesn’t get frosty, so there are amazing views of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) in wintertime. One can also book reindeer safaris, husky safaris, ice-fishing trips and ski treks.

South Beach as long been a gay-friendly destination, but the new Lords South Beach Hotel takes things one step further, branding itself as the first gay boutique hotel brand in the country. Like any self-respecting South Beach hotel, the décor is fabulous, done in Floridian brights, with a ‘70s vibe. Dan Mazzarini and Brian Humphrey of BHDM designed the space, and Levi's designed the staff’s uniforms. Our favorite aspect: The giant pop-art-inspired tinted prints, particularly the one of Liz Taylor as Cleopatra.

Nightclub superstar turned godfather of the boutique hotel Ian Schrager is reinventing himself with two new, distinctly pared down brands. The first is PUBLIC Chicago, formerly the landmark Ambassador East Hotel and Pump Room. It's quite a departure from the wondrous Royalton of yesteryear. The approach is devoid of excess, though no less appealing. Superb service and good taste are key, with its 285 rooms decorated in a soothing "no color" color palette. The idea is more about a comfortable home away from home than an escape into an altogether other, cooler world.
