Avatar: Crazy For Blue

Blockbuster movies are known to spawn all sorts of phenomenon in their commercially driven frenzies: songs played ad nauseam (enough already, Celine!), one-liners (“Show me the money!”), dancing styles (“ah, ah, ah, oh, stayin’ aliiive”), fashion (Audrey’s black sheath, sunglasses, and pearls), and every type of action figure, toy, and video game (thanks—or not—George Lucas). This season’s mega hit, the one that sunk Titanic (ironically, with the same captain, director James Cameron, at its helm) is Avatar. In fact, Avatar made Cameron the only director ever to have two films exceed earnings of one billion dollars.

So, what’s the big takeaway for obsessed audiences from this movie about the Na’vi, strangely beautiful, ten-foot tall, blue-skinned humanoids from the planet Pandora? That’d be...turning oneself into a strangely beautiful blue Na’vi look-alike. Seriously. In a burst of Internet culture at its best, fans are not just adopting blue faces, but filming tutorials on the best ways to achieve such looks.

One of the segments, “Avatar Makeup Tutorial With Glowpinkstah [Beauty Blogging Junkie]”, a tongue in check makeover, became so known in the vlogosphere that New York Magazine’s fashion blog, “The Cut,” even dished about it.
