Adjustment Bureau: Emily Blunt's Flirty Dresses Almost Steal the Show
Emily Blunt and Matt Damon in "Adjustment Bureau"
Opening today, "The Adjustment Bureau" is a romance-slash-sci-fi thriller starring Emily Blunt and Matt Damon as lovers kept dramatically apart by mysterious forces calling themselves Fate. While the rousing chase scenes—not to mention the irresistible chemistry between the stars—are certainly enough to keep the audience on the edge of its seat, on the fashion side, Emily Blunt’s dress wardrobe of vintage-inspired pieces is a cinematic—and timely—dose of warm weather wardrobe inspiration.
Emily Blunt plays Elise, a dancer who is the metaphorical and visual foil to an almost entirely male cast, playing politicians in suits and fedoras. Movie costume designer Kasia Walicka Maimone, who has created wardrobes for notable films including "Amelia" and "Capote," told film critic and blogger Emanuel Levy that Elise’s character “needed to have this dramatic contrast to the world of the politicians, of their super-structured uniform look.”
To achieve that contrast, costume designer Kasia Walicka Maimone sourced vintage dresses that invoke a modern vibe. Her choices feature expressive colors, silhouettes that emphasize movement, and long hemlines with layers or pleats to create volume. Shoulder-baring necklines with straps and details that draw attention to Emily Blunt's muscular dancer's back are sexy without being obvious.

Two of Emily Blunt’s standout dresses include a spaghetti strap silk maxi dress with a lingerie-inspired lace overlay bodice and a more casual ankle grazing halter with wide straps tied to fall across her back and shoulders. For a dance sequence, Emily Blunt is in muted red chiffon with black-banded trim and longer layers of chiffon forming a delicate train in back. Kasia Walicka Maimone collaborated with The Cedar Lake Ballet Company, whom she calls the “rebels of the ballet world,” to achieve the precarious balance of soft and tough that defines Emily Blunt’s dance company in "The Adjustment Bureau" movie as well as her dresses.
We love that Kasia Walicka Maimone avoided straight-from-runway designer dresses that, for most of us, aren’t reasonable spring fashion investments. Here, we've rounded up a series of elegant and trendy dresses inspired by both the film and many of the spring season's biggest fashion trends—maxi dresses, halter necklines and ballet and lingerie-inspired looks.
