You’ve heard of a picture wall and a plate wall. How about a license plate wall?

When Boston area architect Deborah Baskin designed the interiors of her family’s new home, she decided to use old license plates as a decorative element above the desk in her son’s bedroom. We’re totally loving the look. And, it’s “green.” Yes, metal can be recycled, but we’d much rather reuse.
When asked about her inspiration, Baskin tells us, “The license plate wall started two years ago when my son Ben was getting interested in geography. It’s a work in progress. Each year, I order eight [license plates] from eBay for him as Hanukkah gifts. I'm looking forward to choosing this year's batch (never mind that he has particular states in mind and I have color coordination issues). My plan is to cover that whole section of the wall, floor to ceiling, with license plates.”
Baskin explains that the array of plates will eventually function like a painted accent wall, acting as the focal point in the room. We love that she added other elements to the montage too, like a cardboard moose head, moose crossing sign and a black and white moose photograph. Notice that she even found a plate that spelled out her son’s name.
It's easy to get the look at home:
Northwest Territories Polar Bear License Plate (buy it now price, $44.99)
With options like Canadian plates in polar bear silhouettes, plates featuring birds, trees and sunsets, as well as historical themes like Native American iconography and gold rush graphics, you can have a lot of fun assembling a set that reflects your particular interests, our your child's. True, license plate walls work really well in a kid’s bedroom or playroom, but would be equally at home in a study, or even in the main room of a ski house or lake cabin.
Here's an ensemble that we curated using plates we found on eBay:
