Big Love: from Jupiter Creek, UT to the Spring Runways
HBO's Big Love: Season 5 (provided by YouTube)
Rapunzel braids, betrayal, sex, exile, revolt, virginity, adultery, poisoning and pitchforks. It’s not Shakespearean tragedy; it’s the hit series on HBO "Big Love." This Sunday, "Big Love," a story centered on a family of modern fundamentalist polygamists living in the fictional town of Jupiter Creek, UT, begins its fifth and final season. No doubt the show's legions of devoted "Big Love" series fans expect a satisfactory final lap for polygamist patriarch Bill Henrickson (Bill Paxton) and his three wives, portrayed by Ginnifer Goodwin, Chloe Sevigny and Jeanne Tripplehorn.

Despite the "Big Love" series' abundance of soap opera-worthy plotlines, teeming with back stabbers, shady politics, sex and violence, the fashion of HBO's "Big Love" series has remained as pure as the driven snow. Though the hairstyles have evolved over the years (Ginnifer Goodwin’s Margene went platinum!) and hemlines have crept a up bit, the high collar styles, muted pastels, sensible shoes and prim cardigans remained, occasionally energized with a liberty print, ruffle, or a splash of color.

While still a teen, actress Chloe Sevigny, who plays "Big Love's" Nikki, was dubbed New York’s original "It Girl" for her artfully cool street style. In HBO's "Big Love," however, she traded in her off-screen platforms and minis for prairie hair and a wardrobe reminiscent of Ralph Lauren’s most demure designs, trend circa 1985.
We find it intriguing that as HBO's "Big Love" series comes to a close it just may have hit its stride, fashion-wise, that is. The Spring fashion runways were brimming with whites and soft neutrals, long hemlines, unadorned necklines, a distinct lack of embellishment, minimal accessories and silhouettes with just enough form keep them far from frumpy. Straying from the fierce minimalism of seasons past, this modest minimalism fashion trend—spearheaded by Phoebe Philo at Celine, but also seen at Derek Lam, Stella McCartney, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Chloe and others—manages to be sexy without feeling obvious.
